Chargers get much-needed RB improvement with Omarion Hampton

Heading into the draft, there was not another player paired with a team as much as North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton was to the Denver Broncos. However, Denver passed, taking Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron.

Despite signing Najee Harris to a one-year contract this offseason, the Los Angeles Chargers took Hampton with the No. 22 pick.

At this point in their careers, Hampton is a much more explosive athlete who can transform the offense with his multi-faceted skillset out of the backfield. Harris will provide stability, but Hampton could take over the RB1 role early.

The Chargers lacked playmakers, and the offense was heavily reliant on dinking and ducking down the field despite having Justin Herbert at quarterback.

Hampton, who is 6-foot and 221 pounds, averaged 5.9 yards per carry last season and had 45 runs for 10 yards or more.

In addition, Hampton is a reliable pass catcher, securing 38 receptions for 373 yards and two touchdowns last season.

After being dependent on an injury-riddled J.K. Dobbins and sluggish Gus Edwards last season, the Chargers have upgraded the rushing attack with Harris and Hampton leading the backfield.

Adding another receiving weapon is something Los Angeles needs to consider at some point during this draft, but the offense should be much improved regardless with Hampton in the backfield.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh wants to play physical football while controlling the tempo, and Hampton will supply that and more for this offense.
