Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins reworks deal to stay in Kansas City

Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins has reportedly restructured his contract to remain with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to ESPN. Watkins' new deal has a maximum value of $16 million, including $7 million in incentives and a no-trade clause.

Kansas City was down to just $171 in cap space prior to Watkins' new deal. They now have about $5 million in cap space, with the Watkins' restructuring creating some nice flexibility for the defending Super Bowl champions.

Watkins made it known Friday morning on Twitter that he would indeed be returning to the Chiefs, and he seems very excited for the coming season.

With the 26-year-old returning to Kansas City, head coach Andy Reid will maintain Watkins, Tyreek Hill, Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman for next season.

Watkins had 52 receptions for 673 yards and three touchdowns last season, while adding five receptions on six targets for 98 yards in the Super Bowl. His 38-yard catch was a big reason why the Chiefs were able to take the lead against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said in the past he signed Watkins for big games, and the receiver has not disappointed.

Before signing with Kansas City, Watkins played for the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams, where he had 192 receptions for 3,052 yards and 25 touchdowns.
