Cowboys might just end up with two CeeDee Lambs if they go off-script in 2024 NFL Draft
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys are largely expected to take an offensive lineman in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft but nothing is ever written when it comes to the crucial team-building event.

Twists and turns await at every pick, so Cowboys fans shouldn't be underestimating the possibility of the front office taking an unexpected route. There are many non-OL prospects that could make sense for the team at 24th overall and one of them plays wide receiver.

Adonai Mitchell has been a consistent riser throughout the draft process and it's not hard to figure out why: He scored a 99th percentile on A to Z Sports' Athletic Composite Score and displays play-making ability on tape.

A to Z Sports Film Room's analyst James Foster listed CeeDee Lamb as his NFL comp on his scouting report, ranking him as his 15th best overall prospect. Grinding the Mocks projects Adonai Mitchell to be drafted 33rd overall, which hints at the fact that Mitchell could realistically be available at 24th.

Adonai Mitchell Scouting Report

You can read Foster's full breakdown on his Big Board but below is a summary:

Strengths

  • Size, speed, & fluidity that you can't teach
  • Only 1 drop in 2023
  • Has the body control & spatial awareness to make difficult sideline catches
  • Adjusts route tempo & makes crisp horizontal breaks
  • Takes purposeful steps to attack leverage & set up his break
  • Glides between route phases. Footwork isn't segmented or choppy

Weaknesses

  • Mediocre production in college (1407 career yds)
  • Inconsistent physicality on contested catches
  • A lot of his big plays came off of double moves
  • Faced mostly off coverage in the Big 12
  • Doesn't break many tackles after the catch

Wide receiver might not be the Cowboys' top need ahead of the 2024 NFL season but there's no question they could seriously upgrade at WR3 over Jalen Tolbert while also investing in the future for a post-Brandin Cooks era.
