Former Patriots’ preseason star runs into similar problem with new team
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

During the 2023 season, one player impressed during the preseason and quickly became a fan favorite despite all the struggles for the New England Patriots last year.

Malik Cunningham came to Foxborough last season as an undrafted free agent and impressed throughout training camp. However, with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe in the quarterback room along with others cycling through meant that the Patriots didn't feel a need for Cunningham in the quarterback room. So instead, they tried him out at receiver.

Throughout all the Patriots' quarterback controversy, many fans were hoping former head coach Bill Belichick would give Cunningham a shot at quarterback. But that never happened.

So when he signed with the Ravens, it seemed that he might get to move back to quarterback rather than receiver. But Baltimore is having a similar issue.

"I think that remains to be seen," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said (via the team website). "We're going to take a look at him and see how he does. He's definitely developmental as a quarterback. He's developmental as a wide receiver, too. But he's a good athlete. He's a good person. He's a competitive guy, he wants to do well."

Cunningham's time in New England was truly a whirlwind, going between the practice squad and the active roster a few different times. And it ultimately came to an end when Cunningham was signed by the Ravens from the Patriots practice squad in December.

But things do seem to be going better in Baltimore. And as they get closer to the season, they will also iron out Cunningham's exact role with the team.
