'I wouldn’t even blink on that': Amid contract talks, Jerry Jones makes his intentions clear to continue with Dak Prescott
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Out of all the questions that Dallas Cowboys fans had headed into free agency following their painful first-round exit to the Green Bay Packers, ‘Will Dak Prescott return as our QB?’ was not one of them. As the quarterback heads into the final year of his four-year deal worth $160 million, there is a lot of speculation concerning his future.

Jerry Jones had iterated during the season that the Dallas Cowboys aimed to offer Dak Prescott a long-term extension which would lock him in for the foreseeable future with the team during free agency. However, despite the quarterback having an MVP-caliber 2023 season, talks about his extension appear to have gone silent.

The owner-operator believes that Prescott has more to offer and that the Cowboys will continue to stick with him as their QB1. Jerry Jones, in his pre-draft press conference, opened up on multiple topics related to his team.

We want Dak Prescott. That’s that. The improvement demonstrated that there’s more. We want Dak. We think there is room for growth. Dak, quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, I wouldn’t even blink on that.

Jerry Jones reassures Cowboys fans about the future of Dak Prescott

His statement comes as reassurance for fans of America’s team, whose anxiety have continued to increase due to inactivity from the team so far in free agency. Jerry Jones has not done much apart from signing linebacker Eric Kendricks to replace Leighton Vander Esch following his retirement and Royce Freeman to one-year contracts.

The understanding is that Jones is focused on getting the NFL Draft right. The Cowboys have had immense success in drafting and developing players over the years. Once the draft concludes, based on the positional requirements, the team will look to the free agent market to fulfill its needs.

This year and the subsequent year is crucial for Dallas, as the team will have CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, and other stars come to the end of their existing contracts.

Dak Prescott threw for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions with a QBR of 72.7 this season. He threw the most TDs in the regular season and was ranked behind Brock Purdy in terms of QBR. Jerry Jones’ statement makes it clear that he will continue to be the quarterback of the Cowboys but when he says he wants to see more from him and believes that he can do better, he is likely referring to Dak’s ability to carry the Cowboys in the playoffs and perform in that situation.
