Is an NFL coaching job in Eddie George’s future?

Eddie George spent nearly a decade in the NFL as a player, and now he’s returned as a coach. At least for the next two weeks.

The Chicago Bears announced on Friday that they’d added George and Florida State defensive coordinator Randy Shannon to their coaching staff for OTAs as part of the NFL's Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.

"We are very excited to welcome these two highly talented coaches in Eddie and Randy,” Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said in a release. “Allowing them to join our staff during our OTAs enables us to offer this unique opportunity to current college coaches during their offseason. We are confident that these coaches will be great assets to our team during their time here, and we are looking forward to learning from them as well."

The head coach of the Tennessee State University Tigers, George has a 9-13 record in his first two seasons. TSU won a combined five games in the two previous seasons before George’s arrival.

While the 49-year-old has not publicly hinted at wanting to leave TSU anytime soon, he could be pondering a jump to the professional ranks at some point. The NFL uses the coaching fellowship as a resource for coaches and scouts to “observe, participate, gain experience and ultimately gain a full-time NFL coaching position,” suggesting George could be in line for assistant coach or coordinator positions in the not-too-distant future.

In nine NFL seasons — eight with the Tennessee Titans, one with the Dallas Cowboys — George rushed for 10,441 yards and 68 touchdowns and added another 2,227 yards and 10 touchdowns receiving. He was a four-time Pro Bowler, a two-time All-Pro and the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1996.

George is a member of the Oilers/Titans Ring of Honor and his No. 27 was retired in Sept. 2019.
