Is Broncos rookie QB Bo Nix the favorite in competition for starting job?

Apparently, Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix is already the front-runner in Denver's competition for the starting job.

"The Broncos used the No. 12 overall pick on Nix, who comes out of college as experienced as any quarterback," wrote ESPN's Dan Graziano. "Having played 34 games for Auburn and another 27 over the past two seasons for Oregon, Nix should be NFL-ready at this point, and he should absolutely be considered the favorite to start Week 1 for the Broncos."

Nix's experience is one reason the Broncos drafted him. Denver general manager George Paton recently told Mike Klis of KUSA-TV in Denver he feels the 24-year-old is more "game-ready" than younger prospects.

Denver may need a passer who can step in and play right away. This offseason, the Broncos acquired former Jets QB Zach Wilson, who threw more interceptions (25) than TDs (23) in three seasons with New York. Backup Jarrett Stidham completed a subpar 60.6 percent of his passes in two starts with Denver last season.

Although Broncos head coach Sean Payton didn't clarify how he plans to split snaps throughout the offseason, he admitted Nix is making solid progress thus far.

"No, it's been exactly what we saw [in the draft process]," Payton said of Nix in a Saturday news conference. "The only thing I can think about that was a little bit of a surprise is when we went to work him out privately and stood around him, he was bigger than I expected. But nothing in the last two days. He's doing well."

If Nix starts in Week 1, it could be a good sign. It would signal former Super Bowl champion Payton believes the 2023 Heisman finalist can become the face of the franchise.

Denver must find the answer at the sport's most important position. Since Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning retired after winning Super Bowl 50, the Broncos have posted seven straight losing seasons, the franchise's longest streak since 1972, per NFL.com's Kevin Patra.
