Jared Goff extension sets Lions record, puts him among elite QBs

When the Detroit Lions acquired Jared Goff in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams after the 2021 season, it was unclear whether they viewed the former No. 1 overall draft pick as a fill-in quarterback or potential franchise guy.

Three years later, we certainly know what Goff has become for the Lions: a franchise cornerstone. And Detroit is paying Goff accordingly.

The Lions and Goff have agreed to a 4-year, $212 million contract extension that includes $170 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The deal makes Goff the highest-paid Lions player ever. It also makes Goff the second-highest paid player in the NFL on a per-year basis at $53 million.

It’s hard to say that Goff doesn’t deserve the deal.

After a shaky first season in Detroit, Goff has played excellent football and helped the Lions become a force in the NFC. He has passed for 59 touchdowns against just 19 interceptions over the last two seasons. The Lions went 12-5 last year, won the division and reached the conference championship game.

This offseason, the Lions signed Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell to contract extensions. Now they have also locked up Goff, which really ensures the team’s offensive core will remain intact.
