NFL Makes Punishment Decision on 49ers All-Pro OL Trent Williams

The shorthanded San Francisco 49ers were unable to take down another one of the best teams in the NFL during their Week 6 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past Sunday. Led by Baker Mayfield's two-touchdown outing, the Buccaneers pulled off the 30-19 victory.

With the loss, the 49ers fell to 4-2 on the season, while Tampa Bay found itself tied with the Indianapolis Colts for the best record in the NFL at 5-1.

While the loss already had to sting by itself, San Francisco's three-time All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams may find himself having even more disdain for the Week 6 loss. With 5:52 remaining in the fourth quarter and the 49ers trailing 27-19, Williams got tangled up with Tampa Bay safety Tykee Smith.

On a play that ended with Mac Jones getting intercepted, Williams can be seen grabbing Smith by the face mask and taking him to the ground. The two were eventually separated by the official, but an unsportsmanlike penalty was still assessed on Williams.

While Williams cost his team 15 yards, he also cost himself some money.

As announced by the NFL on Saturday, Williams was issued a $11,593 fine for the incident.

According to Spotrac, this marks just the third time that Williams has been fined in his 15-year NFL career for in-game conduct, as he was fined in both 2023 and 2024 for fighting. However, he has paid over $4 million in fines to the NFL over the course of his career as he was suspended in 2011 and 2016 due to substance abuse when he was with Washington.

Williams and the 49ers will look to bounce back on Sunday, as they'll host the Atlanta Falcons (3-2). Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock with Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth on the call.
