Packers' Aaron Rodgers mentions Jets' talent amid rumors

Rodgers made his latest comments amid speculation that Jets owner Woody Johnson and head coach Robert Saleh could view the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player as a replacement for second-year pro Zach Wilson following Wilson's woeful 2022 season. NBC Sports' Peter King wrote for Monday's "Football Morning in America" column that the Packers "would want at least two first-round picks" for the future Hall of Famer, and King also pointed out that he'd "guess" Johnson "would happily pay that freight" if Rodgers would accept joining the Jets. 

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport linked Rodgers with the Jets during a Monday interview on "The Pat McAfee Show," but the 39-year-old indicated Tuesday he could ride off into the sunset of retirement this winter or spring. 

"All the other ideas about [a] trade and whatnot, that's all conjecture until I decide what I want to do moving forward for myself," Rodgers told McAfee, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN. Rodgers also admitted he may have to rework the massive extension he signed with the Packers last March to return to his current employer or join a different team.

Rodgers is set to earn $59.465 million guaranteed if he plays next season, but adding so-called "void years" to the deal could ease salary-cap charges attached to the contract. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used this method to hold onto Tom Brady through the 2022 season. 

Rodgers added that he hopes Wilson gets to work with an offensive coordinator capable of getting the best out of the 23-year-old's physical attributes after New York and Mike LaFleur "mutually" agreed to part ways. Wilson theoretically could receive such guidance with the Jets serving as Rodgers' backup for even one year.
