ESPN Summer NHL Power Rankings: Flyers ranked third in the East

ESPN.com released some incredibly early NHL Power Rankings and have the Flyers ranked third in the Eastern Conference, behind the Penguins and Canadiens. I can see why the defending Eastern Conference Champion Penguins are ranked higher than the Flyers, but what have the Canadiens done to prove they are better than Philly? Acquiring Alex Tanguay is enough to vault them past the team that worked them in the playoffs? Isn't Carey Price still their goalie? Anyway, at least the Flyers are getting some respect, although the rankings are done by Scott Burnside, whose predictions during last years NHL Playoffs were laughable.

True the Flyers did beat the Habs, however, one change in philosphy for the Habs and they're better. Crashing the net is what they needed to do against the Flyers, they just weren't tough enough to make it happen. They change that, and they'll be hard to stop.

True, but what have they done to make themselves tougher? Getting Georges Laraque was a start, but they still have a lot of soft, finesse players on that team.

Agreed, but they were the number one seed, we have yet to do anything either to improve our chances. I'm not saying I agree with the rankings , I'm just saying I can understand why they made them that way. We still are in desperate need of a puck-carrying defensemen. I love the signing of Metropolit and Asham, but they won't put us over the top yet.

Very true, I guess if anything, with the losses of Umberger and Prospal, the Flyers look worse on paper.

Well you got Giroux who will be up, and I see him as a young Briere type, he could really bring some offensive production. You also will have Downie having a bigger role, more ice time. I really believe that Lupul is just about ready to hit his peak as an NHL player, hence the reason for locking him up. Having more team speed on defense will make an immediate impact on the how the offense plays, I think it will be real noticable.

You had to trade Umberger, or get rid of Jeff Carter. And as far as Prospal goes he had a good first round but really sputtered out at the end there, and he didn't want to be here anyhow, his heart is in Tampa.
