The Phoenix Coyotes will keep three of their goaltenders David Aebischer, Alex Auld, and Mikael Tellqvist for the upcoming season. To compensate, they sent forward Bill Thomas to the AHL affiliate the San Antonio Rampage and put defenseman Brendan Bell on waivers. If Bell clears, he will join Thomas.
I'm not sure how this will pan out in the real world because the Detroit Red Wings did the same thing with the reappearance of Dominik Hasek, Curtis Joseph, and Manny Legace in 2003-2004. Of course, the quality between the trios are vastly different and injuries to both Hasek and Joseph played a pivotal role in the Red Wings season. I seem to remember debates over ice time as well.
Aebischer, Auld, and Tellqvist really need to have a solid effort this season; they will see plenty of work. The positive aspect to keeping three is that if one of them gets shelled, there will be two others to help out. The negative aspect is that there are three goalies with only so much ice to go around.
