Will the Flyers Draft a Goaltender?

The 2008 NHL Entry Draft will begin on Friday and the Flyers unlike last year pick late in the first round. The Fly guys seem to have a nice young group of forwards and defensemen who may be ready to contribute in years to come. One glaring weakness in the Flyers farm system is goaltending. During last year it was clear that if Martin Biron or Antero Nittymaki would have been injured for a long period of time, more then likely the Flyers would have had to make a move for a goaltender. As there was not a reliable option in the AHL. So, logically the Flyers I believe will look for a goaltender at pick 27 in the first round. There are a couple solid options that hopefully will be available.

I agree man, jakub kovar is decent, but not NHL caliber. I would assume if Niitty or Biron got hurt this would affect us hard. Neither one in my mind is a SOLID (and when I say solid I'm talkin Brodeur, Nabakov solid), goaltender. We have plenty of offensive bait to shop for one later in my mind.

Yeah it's certainly a toss up when it comes to drafting goaltenders. I mean look at Maxiem Ouellet, we thought the world of him and he never amounted to anything. Jean-Marc Pelltier as well, same thing. Even if the Flyers don't draft a goaltender in the first round I'd expect them to draft one before the end of the draft as well as maybe pick up someone. A name you've heard that can start down for the Phantoms, I mean Martin Houle did an ok job I suppose but I don't expect the Flyers to depend on him as the number three going into this year.

Any free agent goalies that they would consider signing to an AHL contract? Someone with NHL experience, but has the ability to fill in (if a major injury occurs) for a game here and there? Or is anyone in need of a decent backup? We could consider trading Nitty for a pick and signing Kolzig.

You probably wouldn't find many at this time, not yet. Most low end guys will wait until they can get offered a split-level contract, with the posibility of getting called up. That's why Boucher went to San Jose, if we were to ever bring him up we would have had to sign him , he'd count against the cap and all that. So he was basically just signed by the Phantoms. Your not going to find many guys willing to be happy with just an AHL contract yet. Those guys will wait around , see if there are any injuries on some teams and things like that. I can't see them trading Nittymaki yet, they are way too thin at the goaltending position to trade him away. However, in the future I could see it.

But seriously, look for the Flyers to not only draft a goaltender but sign one as well.
