2008 Fantasy Football Projections - Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers were solid as usual in 2007, winning games and making it to the playoffs with stifling defense and a less-than-usual conservative offense under first-year coach Mike Tomlin. Offensively, the Steelers flashed some new formations but for the most part stuck to their tried-and-true formula of running the ball, racking up 511 carries for 2,151 yards. Willie Parker rushed 321 times for 1,316 yards but had just two touchdowns while backup and spot starter Najeh Davenport had 107 carries for 499 yards and five touchdowns. Hines Ward had a typical season, catching 71 passes for 732 yards and seven touchdowns. Second year wide receiver Santonio Holmes only caught three more passes in 2007 than his rookie year but went for 118 more yards and six more touchdowns. Tight end Heath Miller had his...

Mawae says players will fight hair proposal

New NFLPA president Kevin Mawae said Thursday he's against the cutting of the hair proposal brought on by Herm Edwards, and he is going to fight it. He said, "I don't think there is any rule in the NFL rulebook saying your hair can't be a certain length. For management, council or ownership to say we need all our players to cut their hair or bind it up or whatever, I think they need to understand it goes way beyond just haircuts," Mawae said. It goes into a cultural issue with the African American population in our league, and also with the Polynesian population. The hair is a part of their culture. It's part of the history and the background. To ask a player to cut it off just because a select few don't like it, I think there is an issue with that."

I think it's dumb. These men have been growing their hair for several years, now all of a sudden you want them to cut it off. I understand putting it in a pony tail or tucking it in, but just asking them to chop it off is stupid.

No-fun league strikes again?

SpyGate. Performance-enhancing drugs. Violent fights at strip clubs in Vegas. Spousal abuse. Domestic violence. Concussive head injuries.

Of all the 'citizenship' issues facing the NFL, which one do you think they're choosing to focus on lately? If you guessed any of the above, you'd be wrong. Instead, a report surfaced on SI.com Wednesday that the NFL is debating new rules about hair length.

Yep.

The rule banning long hair on the field was proposed by Kansas City. It does not require players to get haircuts, but does "require them to tuck it up inside their helmets," said Atlanta president Rich McKay, chairman of the league's competition committee.

An example of the dangers of long hair given in the article was Troy Polamalu, who "had his hair grabbed by Kansas City's Larry Johnson and was thrown to the turf after an interception against the Chiefs."

So apparently the Chiefs are saying Polamalu shouldn't have been allowed to tempt Johnson with all those flowing locks just crying out to be grabbed. Maybe Johnson should find a more sportsmanlike way to stop Polamalu? Just a thought.

But really, isn't some Home for Lost Boys around the league on the verge of taking in Pacman Jones? (It could even be us!) Aren't there a few more pressing issues when it comes to player safety?

Even aside from that, it would just be a bummer for me as a fan of the offensive line of the New England Patriots to see their 'rally mullets' curtailed by the scions of decency at league headquarters. Without his fierce fiery mane, I'm afraid my boy Matty Light especially might be at a disadvantage in future playoffs.

Can you say Control Freak?

When I find a link to the story I will post it, but I just heard it at the end of NFL live, the league is considering asking players to cut their hair if it covers the name on the back of their jerseys. I think the commish is going a little too far here. He's already inserted the 15 penalty rule for excessive celebrations now he wants people to cut their hair? He needs to chill I see nothing wrong with the long hair, its not like the refs dont know who the players are so what the difference does it make whether their hair is short or long? This is so dumb, I hope they dont try to pass this rule.

Mr. Carrol Wont Be Comming To Washington

While most of the Pete Carroll attention belongs to Arthur Blank and the Falcons, Skins fans cant help but think why not us? If the Pete Carroll era in Southern California should come to an end, why shouldn't his new era begin in the nation's capital?
The Skins clearly have the most means to go after a coach like Carroll, and an owner with the will to get it done. If Dan Snyder puts his mind on something, we all know he usually gets what he wants. And why wouldn't they want Carroll? In his past NFL experiences he lead the Patriots to two playoff births and the team won the superbowl the very next year after he left.
The Skins know that Carroll has the ability to organize, plan, and inspire a dynasty with the incredible success USC over the last several years. The Trojans are constantly competing for the national title and constantly have the most talented team in football. His infectious personality helped him recruit and leadership helped him bring the talent together. While he won't be recruiting in the NFL, there's no reason to think that a coach who coached the best young talent in the league wouldn't want to return to play under him when they become free agents.
Imagine having a coach with an already good relationship with players like; Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer, Lendale White, Lofa Tatupu, Reggie Bush, Troy Polamalu, Mike Williams, Dwayne Jarret, Sammy Knight, and Frostee Rucker.
Truthfully there is no better time for Carroll to leave his self built dynasty either. While it's true that they have a great shot at winning the national title again next year, the cloud of Reggie Bush's scandal looms over usually sunny L.A. While it's no certainty, there is a possibility that USC could lose their national titles and be sanctioned by the NCAA, completely destroying the legacy Carroll put together. Not only would he possibly dodge the sanctions, he would be coming to a Redskins team that is ready to compete right away in the NFC.
The real question however is will Pete Carroll have the will to leave the comfort of USC to the NFL that didn't treat him so kindly years ago. While in New England he won an AFC East title, and a wildcard birth in two of his three years, but he wasn't able to win over the fans. Why? He fallowed a legend, Bill Parcells. Patriots owner Robert Kraft himself said it wasn't Carroll's fault, he was subject to unfair pressure. Would fallowing Joe Gibbs in Washington be any different?
For the Redskins it is not the most opportune moment as well. They already have two "Assistant Head-Coaches," one of whom, Greg Williams, has a contract that all but promises him the head coaching job when Gibbs leaves. It was part of Williams condition for not leaving for head coaching offers elsewhere, that if for some reason he gets passed over for the head coach position he will receive a huge bonus. If Carroll came to Washington he would almost definitely bring his own defensive scheme with him, edging successful Williams out.
It seems that while it would almost be a fairy tale to have Carroll build a dynasty in Washington, it doesn't seem like it's a fairy tale that will come true. If Joe Gibbs taught us one thing about running a successful organization it is that it starts with people. People like Greg Williams who stuck with the team through think and thin. People like the defense who have a close connection with their leader. Gibbs also taught us that continuity will finally lead the burgundy and gold back to the promised land. And that's no fairy tale.

Steelers-Jags Preview

The Steelers will play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the playoffs today for the first time. For those of you who do not know, the Steelers lost to Jacksonville earlier this year at home. This was the Steelers only home loss. They were obviously outplayed and physically dominated. This might have been the first time I have ever seen the Steelers get beat at their own game. They ran the ball and stopped the run.The Steelers do still have a winning record (5-4) at home against the Jags, but are not favored in this match-up. When I think about it it seems almost impossible to go either way on this game. I think Pittsburgh will come out and finally play their physical hard-nosed football on defense again. Also, I believe Jacksonville will do the same, and with the injuries to the Pittsburgh offensive line and Willie,It makes me want to lean toward the Jags. Then you have to consider the fact that Polamalu will most likely play in this game, and he did not in the other game. This brings me back to dead even again. I think that losing Willie and making us use a power running back in Najeh will bring us back to our style of football. I am very worried about the success Fred Taylor has had against the Steelers. Though, having Troy back (probably) will help the pass and run stop very much. Ultimately, I believe that the Steelers will shut down the pass and force them to run all day which will be predictable. It will be one of the hardest fought football games you will ever see, so tune in. If you ask me, having a power running back will get Pittsburgh back on track and lead us to a 3 point victory.

Steelers-27 (-6) Jaguars-24

Jags vs. Steelers round 2 this time winner stays loser goes home

Can the steelers win without WIllie Parker and hold the Jags great rushing attack or will they go down thinking about what they could of done.Well it'll be hard for the Steelers to win without Parker, I don't really think Davenport can run against this dirty dirty Jacksonville D so they'll have to depend on Rothlesburger throwing the ball to Ward and Santonio Holmes let's see. Another huge thing is how will PItt defend that potent rushing attack with MJD and Fred Taylor which is have been looking unstoppable all season and just ask Pitt about what happened a few weeks ago. One thing that the Steelers have going for them is that there a blue collar team and there scrappy, so they'll just pressure Garrard and just go after MJD and Taylor, even though Polamalu had a mediocre season him and Ike Taylor will just go all over the Jags recivers and if the backs go anywhere close to them they'll just smash them to the ground. For the Jags the impact player of the game has to be David Garrard because he'll have to keep the ball out of the Steelers hands and just control the clock and not ruin the game. So as I'm making my prediction I really have to go with the Jags in a close one 31-27.
