Artest, Part 1: Why I like Ron Artest, the basketball player

The main question surrounding the Cleveland Cavaliers has been, "How can this team improve its supporting cast around LeBron before it's too late?" The team tried to pry Mike Bibby away from Sacramento for a year before failing. Now, another King could be on his way to Cleveland to help out King James' court. So here's another question: Can Ron Artest take the Cavs to where they want to go?

The State of the Sports World as of July 18, 2008

1. New York Knicks, save your money : And New York fans, save your heartbreak. I will make a prediction, a la Nostradamus. LeBron James will not become a Knick in 2010, even with an improved Knicks squad and franchise situation.

Firstly, we all know that the Cleveland Cavaliers have re-signed Daniel "Boobie" Gibson for five years. But perhaps more tellingly, LeBron James is reinforcing his Ohio roots by sponsoring his hometown university Akron's basketball program.

The Cavs must still make some more power moves, as vets Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Ben Wallace and Wally Szczerbiak probably won't be around by the time the Cavs are good enough to make it back to the Finals, but I see the above actions as signs that both LeBron and the Cavs are serious about each other.

I say it's time for the Knicks to concentrate on developing their young nucleus of Danilo Gallinari, Renaldo Balkman, David Lee and Nate Robinson for long-term success.

2. Guerrillas in the Midst : The 21st Century is the Guerrilla Century. Whoever is street smart wins. Whoever uses guile wins. Throw big weapons and pompousness out the window.

You all know about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's intention to crack down on players flashing "gang signs" in the NFL. Good Boy has Good Intentions, but to that, I say "Good Luck!"

There very well may be crypto-gangbangers in the NFL, but chances are, if they are indeed flashing gang signs, as the NFL alleges, they are just influenced by culture of their neighborhoods and communities. By trying to crack down on something that is not even clear, the NFL very well has a chance of stirring the pot a little too much and having the players, who care too much about touchdowns, money and girls to give a damn about Gooddell, turn against him.

I suggest that the hard-talking Roger Goodell move from whatever place he's living in right now to the South Bronx until the end of his term.

3. It's still Shaq's World : After he dropped his classic diss of Kobe, everyone has been biting Shaquille O'Neal. First it was New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora freestyling about Tom Brady, demanding that Brady tell him how his ring tastes. The most recent uncleared sampling of Shaq's format was done by MMA fighter Andrei Arlovski, who wanted to know how his "pee pee pee" tasted to Tim Sylvia, when asked by MMA Rated about the rumored relationship between Sylvia and his ex-girl Patrycja Mikula.

There aren't many innovators in the world, period, and there are especially less innovators in the conservative and exclusive world of sports. Shaq is the true innovator of his generation; Rampage looked like he could play the part with his explosive moves in the cage and outrageous humor outside, but his meltdown proved he is no Shaq - Shaq won championships even though his free-throw shooting and fitness weren't exactly optimal.

This time, Shaq should put Osi and Arlovski in their place by dropping a diss EP.

Gibson's Contract Great For The Cavs

Danny Ferry takes a lot of heat. Much of it is well-deserved, but he deserves a hand for the contract that he and Daniel Gibson signed yesterday. Details have now been released about the deal- $20.8 million over 5 years. That is a very cap-friendly number. It is less than a mid-level exception, and for a longer period than Andy or Sasha got last year. Gibson is 22, and the 5 year deal will cover his prime years in the NBA.

Obviously the Cavs would like nothing better than for Gibson to continue his development, hoping that he will become a starting option, or at least one of the most dangerous 6th men in the game. But they also have the option to include a cap-friendly sharp shooter in any deal that they may be looking at in the future. I know that Gibson has become somewhat of a fan favorite, but if the Cavs find the all-star that they are looking for in a trade, Gibson would be somewhat expendable, and more than likely a cheaper replacement for the other team in that deal.

Gibson and first round pick J.J. Hickson are the only Cavaliers under contract beyond 2010, the season that James can opt out of his deal. Between those two, (both starters by that time hopefully) the Cavs would have less than $6 million committed.

When asked who Ferry considered the 'core' group of players he responded-

We have a group of guys in Z and Ben Wallace and Daniel and LeBron … having Daniel with LeBron, it's two young guys. Daniel, for example, having long-term security and a guy we think really fits us in so many different ways is definitely someone we look at as an important part of our organization.

Mary Schmitt Boyer was the one conducting that interview. It was a phone interview, and you don't want to read a lot into it, but interesting choices to me. I suppose you are paying Wallace so much that you have to include him in your 'core group' discussion, but I certainly don't see the Cavs having any desire to keep Ben around for the long haul. Wouldn't surprise me if they attempted to shop his contract during the '09-'10 season. I suppose Ferry isn't thinking much past this season however, because it very well could be his last.

Mad Ballin' : In Daniel "Boobie" Gibson, Cleveland gets its B.J. Armstrong

We all know that Cleveland, in its quest to build a team around LeBron James so that he re-signs in 2010, retained Daniel "Boobie" Gibson with a five-year deal.

In getting Boobie, the Cavs have signed the athletic shooter and running mate that LeBron James needs to pass the ball to when he gets double-teamed or when defenses collapse on him when he charges through the middle.

Like Michael Jordan in Chicago before him, LeBron gets his own B.J. Armstrong.

Cavs ink Gibson, Hickson looking good

The Cleveland Cavaliers can check off their biggest item on their offseason "to do" list. They signed Daniel Gibson to a five-year deal, but terms were undisclosed.

As an aside, I always feel like a team is hiding something when they elect not to disclose the terms of a contract. The Bulls still haven't told us the total value of Andres Nocioni's contract. Shouldn't NBA rules stipulate that all contracts need to be fully disclosed?

The first city we check out is Cleveland Ohio which is home to the Browns, Indians, and the Cavaliers.

The last championship by a Cleveland sports team was in 1964 by the Browns when they defeated the Baltimore Colts 27-0 in the NFL Championship game. The Browns have not made an appearance in the Super Bowl with six division titles but zero conference championships. They even lost the team for three season when Art Moddell packed up the team and moved them to Baltimore. The NFL decided to award the city another franchise which started playing in Cleveland in 1999 at the new stadium that was built where Municipal stadium stood. The Browns since coming back in the league have not appeared in the playoffs barely missing out of the playoffs in 2007 as they lost some tiebreakers. It was the best season for the franchise since 1994.

How about the NBA team which the best player in the league plays on you say? Yea, those Cleveland Cavaliers who have one NBA finals appearance in 2007 and only one division title in 1976 since their inception in 1970. The biggest moment in Cavaliers history is when Michael Jordan hit a jump shot over Craig Ehlo to win Game 5 (deciding game) of the first round playoff series. Now the Cavaliers have local legend Lebron James leading the team but have not been able to get the big prize of an NBA title. There are rumors floating that once James is done with his current contract that he will jump the ship and head to New York to be a part of the Knicks or Nets. This would devastate the Cleveland area as Lebron is from Akron OH.

The final team in the Cleveland market is the most pathetic in the Indians. They were founded in 1901 and have won two titles in 1920 and 1948. They have won the AL Pennant in only three other seasons in 1954, 1995, and 1997. They ended up losing the 1954 World Series to the where they were swept by the New York Giants. In 1995, they made it back to the World Series after a 41 year absence. They lost the series in six games to the Atlanta Braves while in 1997 they made it to the World Series and lost to the Marlins in the seventh game after blowing a lead in the bottom of the 9th. Since then, the Indians have not been able to get back to the World Series including in 2007 where they had a 3 games to 2 lead on the Boston Red Sox but ended up losing in seven games.

Epic Carnival would like to welcome Cleveland to Loserville and maybe someday they can get out of being perennial losers.

NIKEiD Custom Shoes.
Knicks Getting Under The Cap

By now I'm sure everybody has heard all the hype surrounding the 2010 free agent class. The hype is not just media driven because certain teams are already dumping salaries to get under the cap by '10. For example, the Nets gift-wrapped Richard Jefferson to Milwaukee for Bobby Simmons and Yi Jianlian, talk about an unbalanced trade (watch out for the Bucks this year). It seems like the right move to wait and get under the cap by then and to possibly land LeBron, D-Wade or Chris Bosh. As a tortured fan I'm not ready to just pack in the next two years but I understand the logic.

The four players that are going to kill the Knicks chances to get under the cap for the '10-'11 season are Eddy Curry, Zach Randolph, Jared Jeffries and Jamal Crawford. Now lets take Crawford off this list because he's probably the only player on the team who can score consistently and is sorta worth the money. Crawford is going to give you around 20 ppg every night and the possibility to drop 40 or above every game.

Read on to see suggestions on how the Knicks can rid themselves of these contracts............
