George St. Pierre Needs to Prove Himeself to Challenge Anderson Silva

According to Anderson Silva's Manager/Translator Ed Soares "That sounds great … I think GSP is an incredible fighter. But I think GSP needs to prove himself. He still hasn't had a successful title defense [at 170 pounds]. I don't really feel that he deserves (a fight against Anderson Silva fight) yet. Go defend your title a few times and then we'll talk."

I totally agree.

Emelianenko or Silva, which win was more impressive?

There were two MMA main events last night. Each one featuring the two best "pound for pound" fighter in the game today, Fedor Emelianenko and Anderson Silva. Both secured first round victories, but which one was more impressive? Emelianenko knocked Tim Sylvia down with a flurry of punches and made him submit in 36 seconds, while Anderson Silva caught James Irvin's leg and punched him repeatedly splitting him open to the point that Joe Rogan said Irvin's eye was "leaking like a faucet." Watch for yourself

The Anatomy of Anderson Silva's transmission of MMA Foot-In-Mouth Disease to James Irvin

Overview :

As bad as Fedor Emelianenko's ass-kicking of Tim Sylvia looked, Anderson Silva's demolition of James Irvin was worse. In knocking out Irvin at 1:01 of Round 1, Silva made Irvin eat dynamite - and his own words.

I knew Silva was going to hand Irvin his, but I didn't know it was going to happen this fast.

So how did this happen?

1. Anderson Silva is a dancing tank at 205 :

Did you see the punch that floored James Irvin? That is the hardest Anderson Silva punch I've seen. And it's the first time I've seen that kind of one-punch knockout power I've seen from Silva. It didn't look as bad as the way opponents of James Irvin have looked after getting punched by Irvin, but it was still bad enough : Irvin was half unconscious, half covering up after the right he was hit with after getting his leg kicked caught; he was all but out after the pounding that followed.

What we have all witnessed is the fact that Anderson Silva hits significantly harder at 205 relative to his weight than at 185. He hasn't lost much agility though, and that spells trouble for opponents, even elite light heavyweights such as Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin, and Rampage Jackson (assuming he makes a complete recovery) at 205 lbs.

2. Anderson Silva is an alpha male version of Michael Jackson :

There is not a guy in MMA who understands the rhythm of fighting better than Silva. He understands distance, he understands space, and he understands timing. He rarely, if ever, forces things. He just lets the rhythm hit 'em.

When Silva caught Irvin's leg kick before flooring him, he had just switched from a southpaw to orthodox stance to give himself a better angle. He went from "The Catch" to "The Punch" in one smooth motion : no energy wasted, power maximized. It was Silva's understanding of the rhythm of fighting and his ability to dance to the rhythm in a nutshell.

3. Anderson Silva is dedicated to Muay Thai :

After handing James Irvin the beating of his life with Muay Thai, Anderson Silva proceeded to break into a Muay Thai form. He also expressed his love for Muay Thai verbally :

"I'm a Muay Thai fighter, I've been doing it since I was a kid," said Silva. "I didn't come up to the 205-pound division to disrespect any fighters, but if you stand up and exchange Muay Thai, this is what happens."

Through diligent practice of Muay Thai and its forms - and not just practicing roundhouse and knee kicks - Anderson Silva has gained mastery of his body. He has developed the footwork, whole body movements and ambidexterity to dominate fights. Once you are comfortable with your body, then your mind gets comfortable and you see things in slow motion. That is how Silva has been able to pick apart his opponents, and James Irvin is simply the latest.

Summary :

As some bloggers had speculated, Anderson Silva is even more devastating at 205 than he is at 185. The Spider's knockout of James Irvin is the most brutal that he has handed out, and he did it without noticeably losing any quickness. Different martial arts work for different fighters, but it looks like Muay Thai is working just fine for Anderson Silva!

Anderson Silva: The Undisputed SECOND best fighter in the World

Anderson Silva made his debut at light-heavyweight in the UFC look easier than most of his title defenses at middleweight. Silva knocked out James Irvin at 1:01 of the first round and looked as good as he ever has. In fact, I was ready to anoint Silva as the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. The only problem with that was Fedor Emelianenko had yet to fight Tim Sylvia. The best Silva can hope for now is to distance himself from BJ Penn and Georges St-Pierre as the second best fighter in the world because no one is catching Emelianenko any time soon.

Silva KO's Irvin to headline UFC Fight Night results

It doesn't matter what weight class Anderson Silva is at...the results are still the same. The current UFC Middleweight Champion debuted at 205 pounds Saturday night and knocked out James Irvin in 61 seconds to headline UFC's latest Fight Night.

For the complete results and descriptions as we saw it live, keep on reading!

>CB Dollaway defeats Jesse Taylor via Peruvian necktie submission at 1:02 of the first round: You knew it was going to bad for Taylor when Mike Goldberg got his name wrong in the lead-in and they referred to him as JT Taylor for some reason. Nice submission win for Dollaway, but I think this was more Taylor's nerves overcoming him than Dollaway erasing all doubts about him.

>Kevin Burns defeated Anthony Johnson by TKO at 3:35 in the third round: Strange ending as Johnson went down like a ton of bricks after a Burns punch but wasn't knocked out. Replays show that Burns caught Johnson in the eye with a finger, something he had been warned about several times. However, ref Steve Mazzagatti stopped the fight and awarded Burns the decision by TKO. Really? A guy is warned about eye gouging, he does it again and wins? For some reason, Mazzagatti makes horrendous calls when it comes to decisions like this.

>Cain Velasquez defeated Jake O'Brien via TKO at 2:59 in the first round. Velasquez took O'Brien down and got him in that Matt Hughes-style crucifix, unloading fists which O'Brien couldn't defend. After about 30-40 seconds of unanswered punches (some hard, some glancing), the fight was called. O'Brien was dominated.

>Frankie Edgar defeated Hermes Franca by unanimous decision. Edgar simply dominated the entire fight using ground-and-pound, but Franca caught Edgar late with a knee strike that busted up his nose pretty good. Hey, if you're going to lose, at least make the other guy look he was in a battle. Pretty hum-drum overall.

>Brandon Vera defeated Reese Andy by unanimous decision. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Vera blamed his weight-cut for him being tired and post-fight, Joe Rogan is doing his best to use that as a cover. For his UFC debut, Andy didn't do anything to impress. Vera seems like a great guy, but I just don't get why people make a big deal out of him.

>Anderson Silva defeates James Irvin by TKO at 3:59 of the 1st round. Holy sh*t. Silva caught an Irvin kick, landed a straight right that knocked Irvin down and pummeled him for a few more seconds until it was stopped. Silva is truly amazing. Watch out Light Heavyweights...watch the f**k out.

>Rory Markham defeated Brodie Farber by KO at 3:23 of the 1st round. WOW! Farber had Markham on the ropes with powerful strikes and as Markham was backing up, he unloaded a kick that caught Farber flush for the immediate knockout. This was reminiscent of the Gabriel Gonzaga knockout over Mirko Cro Cop last year...entertaining 90 seconds!
