Justin hosted the ESPYS???

I was actually quite pleased with Mr. Timberlake's ability to show that he can do more than just sing and dance. He's actually pretty funny and proved it at the ESPYS. I didn't watch the whole thing throughout, but watched parts of the show on Sunday and Monday. Of what I did see, I could've predicted who would get a couple of the awards like Best Female Athlete (CP of course...this year) and Best Team. I knew that it had to be either the Giants or the Celtics. Either way, everyone who received their awards deserved them...except "Tiger Woods". Will Ferrell was hilarious as he accepted the Best Male Athlete award AS Tiger Woods. But if Tiger REALLY accepted his award with such conceite, he probably would've been booed of the stage. And what's up with all of the celebs? It seemed like more actors and performers were there than athletes. Oh, well. Maybe the producers were trying to find a way to get more people to watch the show. Here's one suggestion...don't show the awards during the same time as really popular shows!

Norm Duke Wins Bowler Of The Year ESPY

Better being a couple of days late on this story than never announcing it. A member of Dynasty's family won an ESPY! Congratulations to Norm Duke for winning an award that he definitely deserved. Here is the press release put out by the PBA:

Norm Duke won the Bowler of the Year Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Award at the 2008 ESPYS presented by Hummer in Los Angeles which aired on ESPN on Sunday, July 20.

The ESPYS celebrate the top moments, most emotional stories and best performances of the past year in sports. Online voting determined the ESPY winners as fans were able to vote for their favorite athletes in each category. Duke beat out fellow PBA stars Chris Barnes and Walter Ray Williams Jr.

"To receive recognition for the efforts required to compete on the highest level in any sport is always meaningful and I am thrilled," Duke said. "The opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of great athletes, and to be alongside those athletes, is one that I will never take for granted. It's a special night for sports and I would like to thank ESPN and the PBA for making it possible."

Duke, who won the Bowler of the Year ESPY in 1995 and 2007, won the final two Majors of the '07-08 season to secure a three-season exemption despite battling injuries earlier in the season. His victories in the Denny's World Championship and the 65th Denny's U.S. Open made him just the sixth bowler in history to win back-to-back Majors and the 10th to win two Majors in a season.

What got into the drinking water in Ohio this weekend?

Carson Palmer basically dunking himself in gasoline an running into a fireworks testing facility by ripping on Ohio State? Seriously, what the hell was going on in Ohio this weekend that was causing everyone to lose their damned minds? Someone needs to get Carl Monday on this, stat.

*note: catfight was not a catfight, and only marginally sexy.

LIST: BEST Players to ever wear the number.......

With all the NFL teams starting camps within the next few weeks and the Hall of fame game within the next month, on Saturday, Aug. 2, the Class of 2008 will be formally inducted into the Hall during an enshrinement ceremony that is not only a moving and inspirational salute to the game's all-time greats; it is also one of the most spectacular events in all of sports. I can't help but think of that Class of 2008 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinees and all the legends that have ever played the game. The 6 enshrinees for 2008 are Defensive end Fred Dean, cornerback Darrell Green, wide receiver Art Monk, cornerback Emmitt Thomas, linebacker Andre Tippett, and tackle Gary Zimmerman.

This make me wonder about all the players we saw play when we were kids and also the ones that we only read about. To an athlete one of the things that link them to their legacy is their number, their jersey number. So I gave myself a project of putting together a list of the BEST PLAYERS to ever wear their numbers. This list is the best players to ever were the numbers 00, 0 - 99.

Here's a list of players that I think are or were the BEST Players to ever wear the #'s 0-99.

Some we will agree on and some we won't. Who knows, maybe someday we can agree on a final list most of us can agree upon. Let's get started. Lets have fun with this guys and gals and please lets keep it clean for all parties who may want to participate with us. Thank You... Now, let the debates begin...

0. Wilber "Pete" Henry

00. Jim Otto

1. Jim Thorpe (wore #'s 3 & 21) over Warren Moon could go here.

4. Brett Farve

10. Fran "THE MAN" Tarkenton

When I turn on the tv on Sunday morning and see sport-fishing on ESPN, I'm always annoyed because I've never considered fishing a "sport". These crazy sons of bitches in New Zealand have completely changed my mind however. This style of fishing is one of the most extreme sports I've ever seen...

Will Tebow Be Able to Cut It In The NFL?

Last year, history was made in college football. And Gainesville, Florida couldn't be happier for it.

As the highly anticipated 2008 campaign approaches, much ado continues to surround Florida Gator sensation Tim Tebow. In 2007, Tebow became the only sophomore in college football history to win the Heisman Trophy. If his record-setting numbers on the field weren't enough to secure him the award, his off-the-field character made him the overwhelming favorite. Florida's golden boy has at least one, and likely two more years running Urban Meyer's high-powered offense. And if Tebow's performance to date isn't enough to make NFL general managers salivate, another season similar to his last could conceivably have teams out of contention throwing games for a chance to select him with their top pick. Sports talk shows in Jacksonville, Tampa and Miami consistently discuss the possibility of drafting Tebow. Easy, fellas, he's only a junior.

Most agree that Tebow's bruising style does not bode well for a lengthy or successful professional career. In the NFL, opposing defenses are bigger, quicker and stronger. Safeties lick their chops at the chance to flatten a quarterback heading in their direction. Even though the NFL goes out of its way to protect its quarterbacks, Tebow's game as it stands right now will at best lead to extended time on injured reserve and at worst, knock him out of the league. While the pros have featured their share of scrambling quarterbacks, Steve Young, Randall Cunningham and Donovan McNabb were never ones to run over defensive linemen.

Coming out of high school, many also questioned whether his game would succeed in the Southeastern Conference. Safe to say it has. His freshman campaign included several possessions where he scrambled to keep Florida drives alive, punishing would be tacklers along the way. Alongside Chris Leak, he played an integral role in their quest for a national championship. As a sophomore, Tebow's rushing stats were gaudy, penetrating the end zone twenty-two times. Tebow is cut from a different cloth. In only two years, he has become the poster child for college football while nearly single-handedly putting Florida back on the map as title contenders. His future holds an unforeseeable ceiling, as long as he can remain healthy.

Meyer has confessed to over-using Tebow last year. Gator fans nationwide cringed as Urban would call Tebow's number on short-yardage plays with leads late in the game. Last year, Tebow took a pounding, including a broken forearm against in-state rival Florida State. Tebow has never been one to slide tackle or avoid contact. In fact, he welcomes it. He runs head first into traffic with little regard for his health, or the health of those attempting to bring him down. So far, he's gotten the better end of the deal.

2008 will be different. No one expects Meyer to use Tebow in that same fashion. Adjustments will assuredly be made. With the addition of USC transfer Emmanuel Moody, as well as speedsters like Chris Rainey and Percy Harvin in the backfield, Tebow's rushing responsibilities should diminish significantly. While Tebow will still run the football, it's highly unlikely his rushing numbers will equal those of last year.

His performance over the next two years will either solidify his position as the top draft pick or increase skepticism about his style of play. Florida's fun and gun offense should yield flashy, aerial numbers to add to Tebow's resume. National title contention will attract even more attention, if that's possible. One thing for certain, Tebow is Meyer's boy. Coach Meyer will do whatever it takes to ensure his success at the next level. Modifying Tebow's game and winning at Florida are not mutually exclusive. So in that sense, he's a project. A more pass-happy Tim Tebow, mixed in with the occasional power rush, can still translate into success in the Swamp, and a less battered Timmy.

If Tebow keeps Florida in contention for another national title while remaining at Florida, and is once again invited to the Heisman ceremony, one would be hard-pressed to find a general manager in the league who wouldn't take a chance on Tebow with their top pick, even if they have no immediate need for a quarterback. While a Heisman trophy does not necessarily translate into success at the next level (insert Eric Crouch, Troy Smith, Danny Wuerffel or Gino Torretta reference here), none of those players won the award as a sophomore.

He's sturdy, he's smart, he's charismatic. He has the potential to become the face of most NFL franchises, and that sells. While Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart dropped to tenth in the 2006 draft, it is as likely that Tebow falls that far as it is to find pictures of him doing beer bongs on the internet. If the Atlanta Falcons are willing to mortgage their future on Matt Ryan, continued success for Tebow might mean he'd be able to name his own price, barring any immediate NFL rookie salary cap.

Tebow's success as an NFL quarterback is still speculation, although after only one full year at Florida, he has shown arm strength, leadership skills and unlimited potential. And while he might never become the next Dan Marino or Joe Montana, one gets the impression he'll be just fine calling plays and winning games at the next level.

The Cream Rises to the Top

Last weekend, in Orlando, FL, Carolina Crown accomplished something they had never done before: They defeated the 9-time World Champion Cadets in head-to-head competition, resulting in a gold medal. Later in the week, in Mississippi, they did it once more to prove it wasn't a fluke. The victory in Orlando, combined with a stellar summer record and a little luck of the draw, made them the headliners of tonight's DCI San Antonio, where they will face off against all of the activity's finest. This summer--and particularly this past week--has shown that judges are starting to catch onto what fans have seemingly known for years: Carolina Crown is legit and here to stay.

Crown has long been a fan favorite--formalized last year with the Spirit of Disney Fan Favorite award--and a favorite of mine. I remember falling in love with them and their 2005 show at DCI Orlando, and I don't remember if it was directly related to me being a shameless homer (I knew by that point that I was moving to NC) or because they are that damn good. Chances are it was a combination of both. They've been one of my favorite corps (along with Santa Clara Vanguard) ever since. The last two off-seasons have included moves that I believe are strong steps in the right direction: Already a hornline powerhouse, Crown brought in Lee Beddis as percussion caption head prior to the 2007 season to beef up the drumline. Beddis joined a team that ultimately put forth Triple Crown, the Fan Favorite, Classic Countdown, and ultimately 6th place--Crown's highest ever placement in Finals--show. This past off-season, when DCI rules expanded corps sizes from 135 to 150, Crown used the opportunity to add power to their already stellar hornline, including the much lauded and unprecedented 16 tubas. Part of the result is that this year's show "Finis", at least so far, has been kicking ass, taking names, and perhaps more importantly, pleasing fans all summer long. Because I'm a fan of DCI and Carolina Crown, I'm going to STRONGLY recommend that you check out your local live show or join the DCI Fan Network to get a full glimpse of the show, but for those that care to get their faces rocked off on the cheap, rumor has it that the show is available on a popular video sharing site whose name rhymes with Moo Boob.

This summer I intended to get my drum corps fix early and, at the urging (and they REALLY had to twist my arm) of some fellow drum corps fans and friends of mine, headed down to Columbia for FirstBEAT. Because I was traveling with band directors and other staff members, I actually got the pleasure of attending a clinic series that Crown put on prior to the event. If I didn't love them already, this certainly would have turned me. All of the clinics were led by Crown staff and moderated by their director, Kevin Smith (with whom I had the pleasure of having dinner while trying not to be Stan). The part that really got me is that the corps is focused, starting from the very top, on providing an unmatched experience for their students and for the fans of the activity. Their COO even so much as said that winning the fan favorite award meant more to them than a gold medal. And with that attitude, I see both in their future. Give 'em hell, Crown!

Miami Dolphins 2008 Training Camp Preview

Miami Dolphins 2008 Training Camp Preview

By Tony Moss, NFL Editor

(Sports Network) -

REPORT DATES: Rookies July 25th, Veterans July 25th

SITE: Dolphins Training Center, Davie, FL

CAMP OBJECTIVES: The Dolphins made almost wholesale personnel, coaching, and front office changes during the offseason, giving this club the look of an expansion team heading into camp. That's not necessarily a bad thing, since expansion teams usually finish better than the 1-15 Miami posted a year ago. The biggest of many questions is at quarterback, where Josh McCown (Raiders) will battle John Beck and rookie Chad Henne (Michigan) for starting duties. The return of running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, both of whom went down with season-ending injuries a year ago, also bears watching. First-round draft pick Jake Long (Michigan) anchors the new-look o-line. Defensively, head coach Tony Sparano and coordinator Paul Pasqualoni aren't sure to have potential holdout Jason Taylor in camp, though there are many more pressing worries on that side of the football. The front seven could feature as many as five new starters, including rookie end Phillip Merling (Clemson), tackles Jason Ferguson (Cowboys) and Randy Starks (Titans), and linebackers Akin Ayodele (Cowboys) and Reggie Torbor (Giants).

PRESEASON SCHEDULE:

Aug 9 - vs. Tampa Bay, 7:30 PM Aug 16 - at Jacksonville, 7:30 PM Aug 23 - vs. Kansas City, 7:30 PM Aug 28 - at New Orleans, 8:00 PM
