New "Day of Rivals" to complement Face Off Classic; will feature Army vs. Navy & Hopkins vs. MD

Inside Lacrosse is launching another day of rivalry matches, tentatively titled "Day of Rivals", which will pit Army against Navy, and then Johns Hopkins vs. Maryland. The Face Off Classic will still be held, and next year's installment will feature a double-header of Duke vs. Maryland and Johns Hopkins vs. Princeton.

Hopkins and Maryland definitely get a lot of exposure from these events, which is great for them, but I'm bummed to not see Syracuse in the mix... Wondering if there were scheduling difficulties, or if the 'Cuse was just tapped out, or if travel costs were prohibitive, or...? If I were Hopkins or Maryland, I might be concerned about the instensity of these match ups and the potential of limping out of two major double headers with injuries, or going 0-2 in some major media spotlight.

Ohio State promotes Myers, an Assistant Coach, to Head Coach position; names of finalists released

Nick Myers will be the new head coach of men's lacrosse at Ohio State University. Myers has been an assistant coach at Ohio State and at Butler, and he is said to have been Joe Breschi's desired successor. Inside Lacrosse reports that Colgate's Jim Nagle, Dartmouth coach Bill Wilson, and Navy assistant coach Stan Ross were interviewed for the position. Truth be told, I'm as interested to see who might be "on the market" as I am in who was selected for the Buckeyes' head lax coach position.

Desko, Syracuse Coach, Named Coach of the Year for Division I Lacrosse... and More!

John Desko not only coached the Syracuse Orange lacrosse team to the national title, he helped the team complete an amazing turn-around in the process, rebounding from a miserable 5-8 in 2007 to a 16-2 record in 2008. The Coach of the Year honors aren't all, though: Desko and the Orange lax team recently visited the White House to celebrate their victory, and just a week later it was announced that Desko will also be inducted into the Greater Syracuse Hall of Fame in October.

Hopkins - Final 4

Johns Hopkins University, maybe home of the richest lacrosse tradition ever and definitely in the top three teams of all time.

It was considered one of the biggest upsets of all time on that Friday afternoon when Duke fans would later think to themselves, " Wow, we really lost." It was supposed to be their year, with their fifth year seniors and returning Tewaarton Award Winner Matt Danowski. They relatively lost no one, that would be the equal if Hopkins had been able to prevent Jake Byrne and Jesse Schwartzman from leaving. But goaltending was not a problem for Hopkins.

With all the fire power in the world and record setting season they had this past year, fans from Syracuse and Virginia headed into the final four hoping that maybe Hopkins would defeat the Blue Devils somehow and do the dirty work.

Oh, did they ever. In what was at one point a three goal game the Blue Jays' held on to win it by one going down to last second clutch saves by Michael Gvoden and Duke's failed attempt to control the rebound for one last attempt.

The clock hit zero. There were cheers but not too many, the stadium was either left overs from the double overtime game before it, or Duke fans. In the parking lots you could see the most bewildered look on people where blue and black. It took a while for it to hit the people, " Did Hopkins do it again?"

This year the game was supposed to be different not the classic teams, but a team who hadn't ever won, Duke. However, Paul Rabil and Michael Gvoden would have no part of that along with Mike Levielle and Dan Hardy protecting the tradition of the game.

Syracuse fans also seemed to be much more excited than the rest, that they didn't have to face the almighty Duke Blue Devils and instead got these Blue Jays to handle. But after this game Hopkins wasn't such an underdog anymore. People were in love with Paul Rabil and couldn't believe his will and drive. Not to mention his late heroics. He wouldn't disappoint in the championship game either, putting six goals in the back of the net and adding on one helper. The sophmore netminder Gvoden played outstanding as well denying Cuse with 20 saves.

But ultimately now the team with the most National Championships (10*), Syracuse wouldn't be denied.

Syracuse Wins Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship

Syracuse won a record10th Division I men's lacrosse championship today*, defeating Johns Hopkins 13-10 in front of a crowd of 48,970. The Orange withstood a valiant stand by Paul Rabil, who himself scored six (6) goals for Hopkins. The Orange defense was physical and aggressive, checking and double-teaming whenever possible. The defense was balanced with a vicious offensive attack, with face off specialist Danny Brennan and freshman Stephen Keogh stepping up to score (Brennan's first ever goal), in addition to the scores from usual suspects like Leveille and Hardy. A complete game from the Syracuse Orange.

* Syracuse's 1990 victory is considered "vacated" due to an eligibility violation, however NCAA records still list Syracuse as the 1990 DI men's lax champion. During the broadcast of today's championship, the announcers differentiated between official championships and championships "on the field". So perhaps it it better said that this is Syracuse's 9th official DI title.

Salisbury defeated Cortland by a score of 19-13 in quite a physical battle. This is the highest offensive output since Salisbury scored 22 against Nazareth in the 1995 final. Salisbury retains the Division III Men's Lacrosse Title and holds the following honors: six titles in the past 10 years, eight appearances in the final in the past 10 years, eight titles overall.

NCAA Lacrosse Tournament 2008 - My Thoughts and Recap

This weekend's NCAA tournament games were incredible. An instant classic game between Syracuse and Virginia, along with a Hpokins upset made for some great lacrosse. The final game on Monday will be very interesting.

Syracuse - Virginia 1st game of the day
To say the least, this game was epic. Mike Leveille played amazingly, putting up 5 goals and 2 assists. He's my pick for player of the game. Syracuse gave us a scare however. They were down for quite a while, and had long scoring defecits. UVA struck first with a goal by Shamel Bratton at 11:23 in the first. Mike Leveille scored at 9:20 to tie the game at 1. At 8:23, Brendan Loftus scored to give Syracuse their first lead of the game. The first quarter ended with Virginia leading 3-2. Syracuse didn't score again until right before halftime, with a Kenny Nims goal at 0:50 left in the 2nd period. By then, UVA had already scored 3 goals, making it 6-3 after Nims' goal. The score remained 6-3 going into halftime. Syracuse had a tough first half, going 22 minutes without putting up a goal. But, they put together a great second half comeback that tied the game up 11-11 by the end of regulation. After a back-and-forth series of overtime periods, Mike Leveille scored the game winner in the second overtime, sending Syracuse into the championship for the first time since 2004. Danny Brennan did an awesome job on face-offs, going 19-27 on the day. Bud Petit played very well in goal for Virginia, keeping Syracuse out of his cage for most of the first half. Coach John Desko himself said that Petit "played great today. It was scary to think at halftime that we outplayed them and didn't have the goals to show for it." Petit had 17 total saves on the day. The final, after two overtime periods, was Syracuse 12 Virginia 11.

Duke - Hopkins 2nd game of the day
Duke came out shooting. They had possession for a good portion of the first quarter. They had 11 shots in the first quarter with goals scored by Zack Greer and Max Quinzani. The second quarter didn't have much action in it, for the first few minutes. After Brian Christopher's goal at 9:14, the game began picking up, with Hopkins leading at halftime 4-2. Duke pulled it together somewhat, pulling the score to 7-5 by the end of the 3rd. The 4th quarter was exciting, with possession going back-and-forth quite a bit. Duke tied up the game 8-8 on a goal by longpole Nick O'Hara at 7:07 left in regulation. Two Hopkins goals, by Stephen Boyle and Kevin Huntley brought the game to 10-8. Duke scored with 28 seconds left to make it 10-9, and tried to send the game into OT. That didn't work however, and Hopkins pulled off an upset, putting them in the championship game for the second year in a row. Kevin Huntley was on fire today, scoring 4 goals for Hopkins. Duke played pretty well overall, but Hopkins just came out to play today. Duke also made a few mistakes that ended up costing them. Hopkins dominated faceoffs, winning 14-23 and picked up more groundballs than Duke, with 39 to Duke's 26. Tough loss for Duke. Final Score: Johns Hopkins 10 Duke 9.

I personally can't wait for Monday now. It's going to be a very exciting game.

Also, some of my information was gained from Inside Lacrosse blogs. I have provided the link to one of the blogs. There, I cited my sources, now you can't nail me for plaigiarism.

Syracuse into Men's DI Lax Championship as 'Cuse beat Cavs in 20T

Syracuse prevailed 12-11 in the second overtime of a contentious, see-saw battle with UVa. Syracuse trailed - badly - at half-time, but turned it on in the fourth quarter. In an overtime that saw amazing saves from the Orange and Cavs goalies, Syracuse finally won on a wicked - almost blind - goal by Mike Leveille. An AMAZING game all around. Congrats Orange Nation!

Syracuse Lax crushes Canisius 20 - 3, will face Notre Dame next

Orange lacrosse produced an impressive win, even if you think Canisius was an easy first round opponent. The 17 point margin of victory is the largest of the year so far for the Syracuse Orange, who haven't scored this many points since the Feb 17 victory over Villanova (21-6). Syracuse has twice before held opponents to 3 or less points: in March against Binghampton (in a 16-2 win) and in April against UMass (in a 16-3 win).
