Fantasy Football Notes - Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks found themselves in a familiar place at the end of the 2007 regular season, atop the NFC West standings, but the way they got there differed greatly from years past. In recent history, the Seahawks had been driven by their running game. That's what happens when you have an MVP type back lining up behind your quarterback. But, as Shaun Alexander's skills deteriorated, a change in philosophy was needed. And, in 2007, the Seahawks did a 180, deciding to hand the reins to quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and become a pass first team.

The change worked as the Seahawks jumped from the league's 19th ranked offense in 2006 to the 9th best in 2007. Hasselbeck, who put up the best numbers of his career, completing 62.6% of his passes for 3966 yards and 28 TDs to 12 INTs, had no trouble becoming the focal point of the offense. The change of philosophy also made Seattle's wide receivers viable fantasy football options throughout much of the season.Like Hasselbeck, Bobby Engram had the best year of his career, which is saying something at the tender age of 35. For the first time ever, Engram topped the 1,000 yard mark with 1,147 receiving yards to go along with 6 scores. Nate Burleson, may have come up a bit short on the yardage side of things with just 694 yards on the year, but his 9 TDs led to 7 double digit fantasy performances. Even Deion Branch and DJ Hackett, who both missed time due to injury, were solid fantasy options. Branch tallied 6 double digit games in 11 played, while Hackett had 3 in 6 games, though he left the first one rather early because of an ankle injury.

While the Seahawks' new offensive game plan aided the value of Hasselbeck and the team's wide receivers, it hindered that of the team's running backs as the team finished 20th in rushing offense on the year. Those low rushing totals led Maurice Morris (101 fantasy points) and Shaun Alexander (99 fantasy points) to combine for a total of just 200 fantasy points. Alexander had well above 300+ points on his own in his 2005 MVP Season.

NFL: Most Overrated Players of The Past 40 Years!

Here is the list of the most overrated NFL players since the Super Bowl began. It's hard to rate NFL players overrated before then simply because the game has changed so much over the years to make it easier for QBs and WRs.

Remember that you have to be considered a great player to be called overrated.

Here we go.

Fantasy Football Notes - St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams suffered through a rough 2007 season as they went 3-13, including a miserable 1-5 in their division. But, unlike most crappy teams, they have a very valid excuse as they suffered through a slew of injuries. Star running back, Steven Jackson, was out with a torn groin muscle for 4 weeks. Quarterback, Marc Bulger, missed 4 weeks with a long-list of nagging injuries. Wide receiver, Torry Holt, started all 16 games, but was clearly affected by his bum knee. Offensive tackle, Orlando Pace, played in just one game, and return specialist, Dante Hall, who played in only 7 games due to a high-ankle sprain, was also missed.

If the Rams can avoid the injury bug to key players, it would not surprise the Bruno Boys to see the team compete for the NFC West title and produce many fantasy football studs in 2008. That is a big if though as Holt, Pace and Bulger are not getting any younger, Hall is just a smidgen of what he used to be with the Chiefs, and Steven Jackson's injury involves a muscle that men just clearly do not enjoy having hurt!

2008 Fantasy Football Projections- New York Jets

After coming off an impressive 10-6 campaign in 2006, everyone thought the New York Jets would compete with the New England Patriots for the AFC East title, but inconsistency on both sides of the football led to a disappointing 2007 season. The Jets finished with a 4--12 record, lost eight of their first 9 games and failed to win consecutive games. A big issues that led to the Jets downfall was the play at quarterback. Chad Pennington started the season under center, but battled injury as well as rocky play which eventually led to the Kellen Clemens era in New York. However, Clemens failed to find his groove and could manage just five touchdown passes in 10 games. Newly acquired running back Thomas Jones surpassed the 1,000 rushing yard mark, but it took him twelve games until he scored his first touchdown in a Jets uniform.

Unretired Quarterbacks, We Love 'em

So this isn't a huge shocker. Brett Favre is thinking about playing football next year. As reported by ESPN, Favre contacted the Packers about possibly joining the team at training camp. I've been waiting for this announcement since Favre made his teary-eyed farewell. The timing is interesting though. The Pack is set to go with Aaron Rodgers taking the snaps and Favre coming back would put the Pack in an awkward position. Let's just say the Packers decide to stick with Rodgers and release Favre which is probably what they'll do if they're really trying to usher in a new era. Madness will ensue… teams will be scrambling to try and sign him. His agent better have two Blackberries, an iphone, and some damn dexterous fingers for all the text messages he's about to send.

I can think of a few teams where Favre would be a great fit. He'd be perfect backing up the constantly injured McNabb in Philly. Parcells (who I hope doesn't follow through with this) loves veteran quarterbacks. He brought Vinny freakin Testeverde out of retirement. You don't think Favre fits that guy's bill? The Tuna could turn the Dolphins around in record time with a quarterback like him. While we're in the AFC East, why not the Jets? Should Mangini be salivating at the thought of Favre wearing a green and white jersey?

As I started to type the words, "No Coach, don't do it, " I remembered that Justin McCareins is no longer a Jet. I also remembered that our offensive line received a serious upgrade in the off season. Both Coles and Cotchery have great hands and toughness. No McCareins means fewer dropped balls even if they are launched out of a rocket-arm. If our line can protect a quarterback, why not him? We have no legitimate quarterback. It's not like the Jets are married to Kellen Clemens - many feel that Mangini might even go back to Chad Pennington. The only thing clear about the Jets' quarterback position is that it's still a work in progress. I don't see how having a proven leader could do anything but help. It's also a great excuse to unload either Pennington or Clemens.

Mangini wouldn't have to bring Favre in as the starter but I'd bet a large sum of money that he would beat out both Chad and Kellen in training camp. Handedly.

The Jet fan in me is hurt by my own words but I can't deny the truth: Favre is definitely a leader on the field in ways that Pennington or Clemens never could be. He's also got a better, more accurate arm.

I realize that the chances of the Jets getting a newly unretired Brett Favre are slim to none and this is nothing more than a long winded daydream by an emotionally scarred Jets fan. Last season was horrible… what was a joke ten minutes ago has blossomed into superbowl aspirations that hinge on a retired quarterback playing in the most unlikely situation. Didn't we try to draft this guy back in the day?

Yes, it's come to this.

Oakland Raiders: Five things to love about them in 2008

What a whirlwind of an offseason this has been so far! It started prior to the end of the Raiders last game of 2007 and the winds of change have continued to 'dust up' many negative insights about the Oakland Raiders as an organization. In fact, many would wonder, with all of the stories written since the end of week 16, is there any organization to the Raiders at all?

It would be so easy to begin believing that there is no hope if you were to have little faith to begin with. If you don't believe, or have little belief left that the Raiders will have a good 2008, then you need to relax a little and take solace with a few reasons that the Raiders are ready for a good year.

2008 Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Projections - San Diego Chargers

2007 was supposed to be the year for the San Diego Chargers… supposed to be. Following a 1-3 start, many questioned the team, especially that first overall pick for many fantasy football owners, LaDanian Tomlinson. It's hard to believe, but Tomlinson had a whopping 130 rushing yards entering week 4. He proceeded to total 132 rushing yards in that game, leading many to believe he was back on top. Congratulations to those of you who bought low early, knowing that Tomlinson wouldn't stay quiet throughout the season. However, week 5, Tomlinson was back to his early season ways, rushing for only 67 yards against a Denver Broncos team the Chargers beat by 38 points. Again, congratulations to those of you who bought low. The reason why?... Tomlinson finished the season with 1474 yards, 19 total touchdowns (including the one he threw), 60 receptions, and 475 receiving yards. Further, the massive stretch run weeks 14-16, likely carried many of his owners to the fantasy football championship. I'm pretty sure Webster's Dictionary has placed a picture of LT next to the word "stud".

As for the rest of the Chargers, quarterback Phillip Rivers was a bit of a...

Patriots player held a handgun to fiancee's head

Troubled New England Patriot Willie Andrews is behind bars again after allegedly holding a powerful handgun to his fiancee's head when she accused him of cheating on her.

The couple were arguing when the 24-year-old Pats defensive back allegedly pulled a .45-caliber Glock, waved it around and then held it to her temple, the 23-year-old woman told police.

She called cops at about 1:40 a.m. yesterday after her alleged ordeal at Andrews' apartment at 10 Connors Ave. in Mansfield.

"At some point during the argument, the handgun went up to the area of her temple," Mansfield police said in a statement.

Cops said the woman fled to a local hotel with her child after the incident. Andrews was later seen by officers talking to the woman in the hotel parking lot but drove away in his car when he saw police cruisers.

He was arrested at his apartment soon afterward, and a .45 Glock was later found near a Dumpster outside his apartment complex, police said.

Andrews was arraigned yesterday at Attleboro District Court on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a high-capacity firearm without a Firearm Identification Card.

He was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing at Attleboro District Court on Thursday.

The New England Patriots [team stats] refused comment.

Gregg Miliote, spokesman for Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter, confirmed the woman's statement to police that the argument was triggered when she accused Andrews of cheating.

The woman told police she and Andrews had been engaged for a month and a half, had been together for three years and have a child together, the Attleboro Sun-Chronicle reported.

It is the second time the Patriots defensive back has gone afoul of the law this offseason.

In February, just two days after the Patriots' Super Bowl defeat, Andrews was busted in Lowell for driving around with a half-pound of marijuana and $6,800 in cash in his car. That case was continued without a finding.

Andrews was also jailed for 30 days in his native Texas after being caught by cops with a .25-caliber pistol in the trunk of his car while on probation for a criminal mischief conviction.

2008 Fantasy Football Projections - Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers were solid as usual in 2007, winning games and making it to the playoffs with stifling defense and a less-than-usual conservative offense under first-year coach Mike Tomlin. Offensively, the Steelers flashed some new formations but for the most part stuck to their tried-and-true formula of running the ball, racking up 511 carries for 2,151 yards. Willie Parker rushed 321 times for 1,316 yards but had just two touchdowns while backup and spot starter Najeh Davenport had 107 carries for 499 yards and five touchdowns. Hines Ward had a typical season, catching 71 passes for 732 yards and seven touchdowns. Second year wide receiver Santonio Holmes only caught three more passes in 2007 than his rookie year but went for 118 more yards and six more touchdowns. Tight end Heath Miller had his...
