Former Kansas State quarterback Chad May put on a show in Memorial Stadium in 1993. May set a Big 8 record by throwing for 489 yards, but he also threw two costly interceptions that keyed NU touchdown drives that put the game out of reach in a 45-28 Husker victory. The following year, the Wildcats were optimistic that they would finally end more than a quarter century of futility against Nebraska. The New York Times rated Kansas State as the #1 team in the country going into the game in Manhattan and both Tommie Frazier and Brook Berringer (not to mention safety Mike Minter) were hampered by injuries.
