£115m man rated 'flop of the season' despite some improved recent showings

Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo, who joined from Brighton in the summer for a sum around £115m, has been called “flop of the season” by commentator Ally McCoist, in quotes picked up by the Daily Mirror.

Ask to choose which summer signing had disappointed him most, McCoist plumped for Caicedo over some other notable arrivals who are struggling at Manchester United:

“Andre Onana has been nothing like the signing everyone thought he would be for Manchester United, but I’m not giving him ‘flop of the season so far’, I think that’s ever so slightly harsh.

“But Moises Caicedo, I saw him a couple of times, particularly at Old Trafford with Enzo Fernandez in the middle of the park, and both of them were, for a quarter of a billion pounds, not great… Caicedo would certainly get my vote over Onana. Rasmus Hojlund? No chance – Caicedo and Onana would get it ahead of him.

“I know Hojlund hasn’t been scoring as regularly, particularly domestically, as Man United fans would want, but there’s a willingness there, there’s an eagerness there, a desire, which a lot of the United fans, the majority if not all of them, can see.

“All the attributes are there and you’ve got to remember he’s still young, so there’s no way he’s coming into consideration for my flop of the season so far at this stage. I’m settling on Moises Caicedo!”

We’re not sure whether these comments came before or after last night’s game, which had McCoist commentating on for TNT Sports. Caicedo, like the rest of his team, looked totally lost against an inspired Liverpool team.

Most Chelsea fans don’t blame Caicedo – he’s had some good games recently and has shown signs of the potential we paid so much for.

But calling him the “flop of the season” is all relative to his vast price tag and the 3 month saga it took to get him. If he had cost £5m nobody would be complaining – but unfortunately when you pay that much for a player you expect instant results, and when you don’t get them, you get things like this cropping up.
