Atletico Madrid are looking for a replacement for Caglar Soyuncu and have reports from Spain suggest that Atalanta’s Jose Luis Palomino has emerged as a target.

Soyuncu is in the process of completing a move to Fenerbahce, leaving a gap in Diego Simeone’s defence with just days left in the January transfer window. Atletico are also just a step away from signing Moise Kean on loan from Juventus, but the move may collapse due to Angel Corera’s situation.

Palomino has only played a handful of minutes for Atalanta this season, still suffering from the recurring hamstring injury that’s plagued him since last year. He has recently recovered from this and is hungry to return to action.

As reported by Spanish outlet Marca, Atletico believe Palomino could be the right option to add some cover to Simeone’s defence for the second half of this season, wanting to pick up a low-cost option. The 34-year-old’s contract expires with Atalanta in June and isn’t likely to be renewed.

Interestingly, Simeone gave Palomino his professional debut with San Lorenzo back in September 2009, starting him in a league match against Club Atletico Tigre.
