Matteo Guendouzi was named Man Of The Match in Lazio‘s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich and Il Corriere dello Sport has praised the French international and Maurizio Sarri, mentioning an Unai Emery quote on the midfielder from his time at Arsenal.

Guendouzi was UEFA’s MOTM in Lazio’s 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Il Corriere dello Sport on Friday praised the ex-Arsenal and Marseille midfielder highlighting his stats in the Bayern game.

Guendouzi suffered three fouls against the Bavarians. Only Jamal Musiala had more with four. The Lazio star also recorded 84% passing accuracy and ‘hurt’ Bayern in central midfield, finding ‘spaces to feed his teammates,’ wrote journalist Carlo Roscito.

Il Corriere dello Sport reporter also noted that Guendouzi has become ‘more disciplined’ under Sarri at the Stadio Olimpico. The French midfielder has ‘courage and personality’, which is not entirely surprising given his experiences at Arsenal and Marseille.

Il Corriere dello Sport also mentioned a quote from Unay Emery when the Spaniard coached Guendouzi at Arsenal.

The midfielder was only 19 when he was sent off in a Carabao Cup 2-1 win over Blackpool.

“He’s playing well, and he’s playing with one thing that is very important, with spirit and competitiveness,” said Emery after the game.

“I think he’s playing with the spirit that I want. Today and in every match. We spoke in the dressing room at half-time that it was very important with control, but I don’t think he lost control in this action.”

The Rome-based paper highlighted that Guendouzi has kept the same fighting spirit, but has become more mature and disciplined on and off the pitch, playing a key role for Sarri in the capital.

Guendouzi, 24, joined Lazio on loan with an obligation to buy from Marseille last summer and has scored two goals in 31 appearances with the Biancocelesti this season.
