Erik ten Hag on trial as new technical director reviews Manchester United managerial situation

Erik ten Hag is on trial as Manchester United’s new technical director, Jason Wilcox, conducts a review of the manager.

The Dutchman has overseen a difficult second campaign in charge, with United crashing out of the Champions League group stages and failing to mount a strong challenge for the top four.

Ten Hag’s position as manager was put into further doubt on Sunday when United’s season threatened to hit new lows when the team threw away a 3-0 lead in their FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City. The Reds eventually booked their place in the final, but it took a penalty shootout after extra time.

Wilcox, who completed his move to United from Southampton last week, will reportedly use the final month of the season to decide whether Ten Hag should remain manager. He will assess his strengths and weaknesses whilst also trying to gauge whether his style can prove successful at Old Trafford – or if the club requires change, reports The Telegraph.

Huge decision for Wilcox to make

This means Wilcox will look at the upcoming training sessions. He’ll also hold talks with Ten Hag, his backroom staff and the players during his review.

Wilcox wants to investigate whether Ten Hag’s relationship with his team has begun to deteriorate.

It’s a huge decision to make and we’ve always backed Ten Hag at Stretty News. That said, many fans leaving Wembley after beating Coventry City felt his substitutions cost us the three-goal lead.
