The 45-year-old Italian, who spent the first nine years of his playing career with Lazio, had been in charge of Frosinone since the summer of 2019, where he guided the team to an 8th place finish in the league, enough to reach the playoffs.

Painfully for Nesta and Frosinone, the team missed out on promotion to Serie A after a 1-1 draw with Spezia in the playoff final. The Ligurian side advanced due to their better performance in the regular season.
