Ian Maatsen To Join Borussia Dortmund On Loan After Signing New Chelsea Contract

Ian Maatsen has agreed to join Borussia Dortmund on a loan deal from Chelsea until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old left-back will sign a two-year contract extension before completing his move to the Bundesliga.

However, it is understood that Chelsea's decision to hand Maatsen a new deal is more about protecting an asset, rather than a signal that the player has a big future at Stamford Bridge.

Maatsen's loan deal with Dortmund does not include an option to buy.

But Chelsea will likely be willing to sell the Dutch youngster in the summer in an attempt to make the club's accounts comply with Financial Fair Play rules.

Chelsea accepted a £31.5 million offer from Burnley for Maatsen in September last year but the player did not want a permanent move to Turf Moor.

Maatsen joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2018. He has featured in 12 Premier League games this season.

He spent last season on loan at Burnley, scoring four goals in 39 Championship appearances.
