Manchester United and Benfica have signed a deal that will see Alvaro Fernandez join the Portuguese champions on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Spanish left-back had been enjoying a loan spell at La Liga side Granada, where he played regularly, before a decision was made to send him to Benfica instead.

However, according to transfer expect Fabrizio Romano, the deal becomes a permanent deal if Fernandez starts 50% of their remaining fixtures.

United have included a buy-back clause and matching rights, plus a sell-on clause.

United did a similar deal with Sevilla in recent days that saw Tunisia international Hannibal Mejbri move to the Spanish side.

This shows that United changed their approach in the market, even shortly after the arrival of INEOS.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see more players leave United on loan this summer.

We can also expect an announcement on Fernandez tomorrow or in the coming days at the very latest.
