Milan Facing ‘Donnarumma Scenario’ All Over Again

Extension talks between Milan and Mike Maignan have reached an impasse amid financial concerns displayed by the San Siro hierarchy. According to Tuttosport (via Pianeta Milan), the economic factor remains the only stumbling block in ongoing negotiations between the parties. 

After losing homegrown star Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer in 2021, Milan turned to Maignan to replace the Italian goalkeeper. Rossoneri tied the France international down to a five-year contract, securing his allegiance until 2026. 

Stefano Pioli’s men seem to have learned their lesson. Desperate to avoid replicating the same mistake, Milan have opened contract discussions with Maignan two years before the expiry of his deal. But they’re facing significant hurdles. 

The keeper’s outrageous wage demands have forced Milan to put negotiations on hold. Maignan currently earns €2.8 million a year, unlike his peers in other top European clubs, whose earnings have set the benchmark high. 

Aware of this alarming trend, Maignan’s entourages have asked Milan for a substantial pay rise. The Frenchman’s camp brought an insane €8m figure to the table, instantaneously putting Rossoneri off. Terrified by these stratospheric demands, they’ve backed off to re-evaluate their options.

The abolition of the Growth Decree has changed the dynamic of Maignan’s contract talks. It makes it impossible for Milan to grant the highly-rated keeper’s renewal wish and compile with Financial Fair Play rules at the same time. 

As things stand, Maignan will have to lower his request to acquire a new deal at the San Siro.
