Tottenham Hotspur might continue to face absences into the next season as the club is expected to be without their star defender at the beginning of the campaign.

Romero, who has been a crucial figure in Tottenham’s defence, is set to make himself available for two major tournaments with Argentina during the summer break.

The centre-back is expected to feature in the Copa America, scheduled to start at the end of June.

Additionally, Romero has also hinted at his participation in the Olympic Games, starting on July 24th, just 10 days after the conclusion of the Copa America.

With the new Premier League season commencing just a week after the Olympics, Romero’s potential absence poses a significant challenge for Spurs as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

Tottenham’s Cristian Romero makes himself available for the Summer Olympics

Football at the Summer Olympics typically involves Under-23 players, with the allowance of three older players. However, Romero, aged 25, has expressed his interest in being one of the older players representing Argentina.

Romero eagerly expressed his desire to represent Argentina in the tournament, indicating his availability if selected by the national team.

As quoted by talkSPORT, the defender said:

“I never had the chance to be in the Olympic Games and I would love to.

“Obviously, it doesn’t depend on me, but if you want to take me I am available for the Argentine national team.

“I continue with the same enthusiasm and desire as always to continue doing things well at the club to continue having the possibility of being here.”

With no rest during the summer break, Romero will be needing time off afterwards and therefore is expected to miss the start of the campaign.

The ex-Atalanta center-back, now serving as the vice-captain, has emerged as a dependable presence for Ange Postecoglou’s squad. Across 23 Premier League outings this season, he has notched four goals while forming a formidable partnership with Micky van de Ven at the back.

Postecoglou will be hoping to have his key defender available right from the start of the next campaign.
