Republic of Ireland interim boss John O'Shea does not appear to be a permanent candidate.

The former Manchester United defender stated that he has not been interviewed for the Ireland manager's job.

While the Waterford man has no issue staying on as interim, he does admit that others may be in the front seat for the permanent gig.

I've no idea, I can't update you," said O'Shea when asked if he knew the identity of his successor.

I spoke to Marc (Canham director of football) recently but it was more so on the two games that I was in charge for and he said he'd update me then in terms of going forward as soon as he could, that things were progressing, but that's as far as I know," continued O'Shea, when asked about a potential interim scenario and if it would be preferable to be appointed on a full-time basis rather than take it on for another two games.

Ah look, that's the ideal scenario, that's how I would feel but, ultimately, Marc has been saying they're looking for someone with experience in the role," he said.

That's something I obviously don't have in terms of being actually a head coach, apart from the last two games and it was something I thoroughly enjoyed.

It's one of them, whoever the next permanent manager is going to be, we want them to be hopefully be the right person for the job and to be someone who really wants the job. If that takes a bit of time, so be it. My thought process is I was given the two games, really enjoyed it, and now let's see what happens.

"I haven't actually been sitting with Marc since, I've just talked to him on the phone, I can't tell you what has changed (with the delay in the proposed early April reveal). They would have liked to announce the manager but obviously they haven't done that."
