Sheffield United midfielder involved in historic AFCON game

Sheffield United midfielder Anis Slimane faced a setback as he played for Tunisia against Namibia in the AFCON on Tuesday. The 22-year-old, who joined United in the summer, has encountered a challenging period, as he found himself rarely selected by manager Paul Heckingbottom. His struggles have mirrored those of several other summer signings who have yet to make a significant impact for the Blades.

Despite a recent upturn in opportunities and positive performances under Chris Wilder, Anis Slimane’s fortunes took a turn for the worse after he donned the prestigious number ten shirt for Tunisia against Namibia in the AFCON.

Slimane experienced an unfortunate turn of events as Namibia secured a historic late 1-0 victory, marking their first-ever win in the tournament. Given Tunisia’s lofty world ranking at 28th, they were expected to dominate Namibia, who are ranked 115th globally, but they may have just been on the wrong end of the shock result of the competition.

The midfielder was arguably Tunisia’s best performer on the day as he registered a 100% dribble success (three), 67% total duels won and a key pass per SofaScore. Slimane is next in action on Saturday against Mali who are currently top of Group E on goal difference.

From a Sheffield United perspective, it is good to see the 22-year-old being involved and put in a decent performance for his country. The Blades are short of game changers off the bench and he possesses all the right attributes to be an important impact sub in the second half of the campaign.
