Dirrell-Hanshaw Preview!

Dirrell-Hanshaw Preview!

May 1, 2008

By Francisco Salazar

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boxing once again returns to the California Central coast on Friday night with a crossroads bout between two young contenders.

Super Middleweights Andre Dirrell and Anthony Hanshaw square off in a 10 round bout at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, CA.

The bout will headline an eight-bout "ShoBox: The New Generation" card, presented by Gary Shaw Productions.

Hanshaw, (21-1-1, 14 KO's) from Warren, OH, has not fought since his only professional defeat at the hands of former pound-for-pound king Roy Jones, Jr. Hanshaw gave Jones all he could handle, pressing the fight against Jones, before losing a unanimous decision. Hanshaw was knocked down in the 11th round.

Prior to that, Hanshaw fought to a 12 round split-decision draw against Jean Paul Mendy in January of last year. Both were finalists in an eight-man tournament, where they were vying for the IBO super Middleweight title.

Hanshaw has had to address issues outside of the ring that has seen him fight sporadically in years. After turning pro in 2000, Hanshaw was inactive in 2003 and 2005. His last victory came over a year and half ago and hopes a victory over Dirrell will springboard him to bigger fights down the road.

This will be Hanshaw's second fight in California. Ironically, his only fight in Southern California was a knockout victory over Lafarrell Bunting.

Dirrell, (14-0, 9 KO's) from Flint, MI, is coming off of a third round stoppage victory over veteran Shannon Miller in February.

Like Hanshaw, Dirrell has fought significant bouts on national television. In June, Dirrell won a 10 round unanimous decision over Curtis Stevens. Prior to that bout, he scored two knockdowns over durable Kenny Kost to win an eight round unanimous decision.

Dirrell has tasted the canvas like Hanshaw in previous fights. Dirrell had to come off the canvas in June of 2006 to win a tough six round unanimous decision over hard-hitting Alfonso Rocha.

Dirrell has been successful as a professional thus far after a decorated amateur career. Dirrell won a bronze medal for the United States at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He was also a 2001 and 2003 United States amateur champion.

In the co-feature, Lightweight Antonio DeMarco will have his hands full against hard-hitting Juan Castaneda in an eight round bout.

DeMarco, (18-1-1, 13 KO's) from Tijuana, Baja California Norte, Mexico, fought a few months ago at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA on the undercard of the Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez bout. In that bout, DeMarco scored a workmanlike eight round unanimous decision over Juan Carlos Martinez.

His career-defining bout thus far in his career was a hard-fought 10 round unanimous decision over fellow Lightweight prospect Nick Casal in September of last year. The back and forth action had the crowd on its feet as both never backed down.

DeMarco is a fan favorite at the Chumash Casino Resort. This will be his eighth appearance in Santa Ynez.

DeMarco is unbeaten in his last 11 bouts, dating back to his six round majority decision defeat to Anthony Vasquez in February of 2006.

Castaneda, (12-0, 9 KO's) from San Antonio, TX by way of La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, is coming off a six round unanimous decision victory over Priest Smalls in November.

His fight against DeMarco will be a major step up in competition. Although he had knocked out nine of his first 10 opponents, it was against non-descript opposition.

Aside from Smalls, Castaneda's other notable victory was a close majority decision victory over Lonnie Smith in October of 2003.

In what could be the fight of the night, Nick Casal and Antonio Ojeda square off in an eight round Junior Welterweight bout.

Casal, (17-2-1, 13 KO's) from Niagara Falls, CA, scored a second round stoppage over James Wayka in March. It was his first fight since the hard-fought battle he had against DeMarco in September.

With a great amateur background, Casal turned pro at the young age of 18 years of age. He knocked out his first 10 opponents and was unbeaten in his first 16 bouts. However, he lost an eight round unanimous decision to Jose Antonio Izquierdo in January of last year.

Like DeMarco, Casal has fought numerous times in Santa Ynez. It will be the seventh time that Casal will fight at the Chumash Casino Resort.

Ojeda, (15-6-3, 9 KO's) from Santa Maria, CA by way of Michoacán, Mexico, scored a third stoppage victory over Steve Marquez in November.

After a two and a half year hiatus from the sport, Ojeda returned in 2003 and was unbeaten in 11 of 12 bouts until a ninth round stoppage to Rolando Reyes in April of 2005. His most significant victory to date was an eight round unanimous decision victory over previously-unbeaten Juan Manuel Buendia in July of 2006.

Ojeda will have the crowd support as Santa Maria is a 35 minute drive to Santa Ynez.

Featherweight Francisco Leal will take on Jose Magallon in a six round bout.

Leal, (13-2, 8 KO's) from Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, last fought in November when he fought to a 10 round majority draw against Giovanni Caro.

Magallon, (8-4, 3 KO's) from Las Vegas, NV, won a clear-cut six round unanimous decision over previously-unbeaten Gregorio Torres in February. He has won his last two bouts.

Four other bouts round out the card.

Tickets are on sale and are priced at $95, $75, $55, $40, and $25. Tickets could be purchased at the Chumash Casino Resort Box Office or by calling 1-800-CHUMASH.

Doors open at 5PM local time, with first bell scheduled for 5:30PM. Showtime will begin its broadcast at 11PM ET/PT.

Nick Charles and Steve Farhood will call the action from ringside for Showtime.

Guzman: Arthur in for beating!

Guzman: Arthur in for beating!

WBO junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman doesn't understand what the hold up is. Guzman was originally slated to face interim champion Alex Arthur on May 3rd in Edinburgh, Scotland, but the bout was postponed after Guzman had to delay his arrival due to visa problems. ""I received my visa on April 24 and was ready to travel to Scotland the next day," he says. "I was packed and ready to go. I was excited. I could have easily fought him on the original date. I don't know why the fight needed a new date other than the fact that Arthur is flat-out scared of me. He was looking for an excuse to postpone this fight because he knew he was going to get destroyed and embarrassed in front of his hometown fans. This only makes me angrier. I want to get my fists on him now more than ever before. This guy is in for a real beating. He's going to get scotch-taped like you wouldn't believe. The visa issue wasn't even a big deal. All the paperwork was in order. I'm convinced Arthur is afraid of me. If he really wanted the fight he would tell his promoter to get us a new, immediate date. It has been nearly a week and we haven't heard a thing."

BOXING: Ray to return to Nick's corner

BOXING: Ray to return to Nick's corner

Ray and Nick Casal might not have always been on the same page over the years, but not having his father in his corner for the first time in his professional career was certainly noticeable for Nick.

"It was awkward for me to not see him," Nick Casal said in regards to knocking out James Wayka in March without his dad in attendance.

Ray, who has had a double-knee replacement in the past six months, will return to Nick's corner as his cutman for Friday's eight-round junior welterweight fight against Jose Antonio Ojeda at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif.

"I felt real bad missing the last one," Ray said. "I've been there with him since day one and when you've been together for so long, you see certain things and you know what works for him."

Nick agreed.

"I always look for him after every round," he said. "I feel more comfortable with him there. He tells me little things I need to work on. He's not the type that yells or insults you, he tells you 'you look good, but if you do this you'll do even better.' "

For this bout, Ray believes that Nick's hook will be the key.

"I've got this feeling," Ray said of the hook. "He's been knocked out twice with the hook, so I feel like that might be our plan."

Nick said his training regimen over the past three weeks has been at his all-time highest as he's trained with WBO Junior Welterweight champion Joan Guzman.

"I plan on using what he's showed me during our training," Nick said. "We'll probably work the body, but like they say 'when you work the body, the head comes with it.' "

Nick's aggressiveness will certainly be important as Ojeda, a Santa Maria, Calif. native, will have the crowd and possibly even the judges in his corner.

"We don't want it to go the distance, we want to knock him out," Nick said.

The fight is slated to begin at 9 p.m.

BOXING: Casal to fight May 2 in California

BOXING: Casal to fight May 2 in California

Only two months after knocking out journeyman James Wayka, Niagara Falls' Nick Casal will step into the ring again.

Casal is slated to fight Jose Antonio Ojeda in an eight-round junior welterweight bout on the undercard of a Sho-Box event on May 2 at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif.

"I'm really happy to be able to get back in the ring so soon," Casal said this past week from his training facility in Las Vegas.

Casal, 22, has fought on a number of the same cards as Ojeda and he knows that this bout is certainly a chance for him to make his mark in the 140-pound division.

"Ojeda is a big step up in competition," said Casal, who is 17-2-1. "He's kind of like the gatekeeper, though, because if I can get by him, there's bigger and better things ahead."

Ojeda, 30, has a record of 15-6-3 and won his last fight in November via knockout â€" but he's either lost or fought to a draw in five of his last seven bouts.

Adding to Casal's confidence has been his recent work with WBO junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman. The tandem share the same trainer in Steve Rowlands. Casal said he's been sparring with Guzman on a daily basis and learning a lot from the undefeated champ.

"Anytime you can spar with a champion, it gives you a huge advantage," Casal said.

Speaking of advantages, Ojeda â€" a Santa Maria, Calif.-native â€" will likely have the home crowd behind him. Casal, though, understands that it's just another obstacle toward his goal of fighting for some a title by the end of this summer.

"I'm not focused on any other fights, except this one," Casal said. "He's a very good boxer and he's been there for a quite a few years. This is definitely a step up for me and I'm really looking forward to it."

Falls fighter is already close to agreement for next fight.

The Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez fight might have been the most talked about, but it was Nick Casal's effort in the final bout of Saturday's ShoBox card that was perhaps most convincing.

Casal, a native of Niagara Falls, dropped James Wayka two times in the opening round and ultimately knocked him out at 1:15 of the second round at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif. The win moved Casal to 17-2-1 with 17 KOs in his career, while Wayka dropped to 15-7-0 with 8 KOs.

"It was a right uppercut followed by a left hook that dropped Wayka," Nick's father, Ray Casal said after speaking with his son immediately following the fight.

The bout didn't end until early Sunday morning after being pushed back until six fights after the main event. Nick Casal fought at 142 pounds, which moved him up to the junior lightweight division after spending his last six fights at the lightweight division (135). Wayka, meanwhile, moved down from middleweight (160) for this bout.

Casal's combination of speed, quickness and strength, though, was too much for Wayka.

"From everyone I talked to, he looked pretty strong at that weight," Ray, a Lockport native, said of Nick. "That's always been his best weight, even when he was younger."

This was the first time in Nick's career that Ray was not in his corner as either his trainer or cut man —the role Ray has assumed since Nick signed with promoter Gary Shaw and moved his training camp to Las Vegas.

"This was the first time I couldn't make it because of my bad knees, but he didn't need a cut man because he barely got hit," Ray said with a laugh.

Nick was unavailable for comment Tuesday as he was traveling to Los Angeles to begin a sparring session with Alfonso Gomez, who gained stardom after his effort on "The Contender." Ray said Nick will spend the next two weeks or so helping Gomez prepare for his much-anticipated fight with Miguel Cotto on April 12.

Nick will then return to Las Vegas to continue training with Steve Rolands and his own training camp. Ray said talks have already begun for an upcoming ShoBox fight on May 3.

"This should be a big fight, hopefully a main event," Ray said
