I have ranked the top 5 Number-One Receivers that could be available for the Eagles to acquire this off-season. I used an equation that factors in skill but more heavily weights the players "Aquireabilty". In an attempt predict WR most likely to end up in an Eagles uniform.
I included skill in my equation to weight the higher compensation as well as the increased attractiveness of superior players. I have left out grades on things like hands and route running, because to be a true number one receiver it must be assumed that you possess a strong skill set needed for the position. The only specific skill-set assessments I have included are those, which I feel clearly distinguish a game-changing receiver: Ability to draw double coverage and red zone production. While there are certainly others I believe these two are sufficient in painting an accurate picture of the players potential impact.
The second set of criteria on which I graded is how realistic the acquisition of sed player is based on the Eagles paradigm. Therefore I attempt to offer you stratified prediction on which if any of the 5 major wide receivers addressed here will end up in an Eagles uniform. Further I attempt to assign a value to each player that reflects the players "acquirabilty", to put it bluntly "who is the best receiver that the Eagles are most likely to acquire". I have used these criteria to rank the top 5(Number One Only) Receivers most likely to be acquired by the Eagles.
5.
Larry FitzgeraldAbility to draw Double Coverage: While some may cite Anquan Bolden playing across from Fitzgerald as evidence he may not be able to draw or handle double coverage, Bolden missed 4 games in 2007 due to injury. In those four games Fitzgerald averaged 108 yards and 8 catches. It is clear Fitzgerald can draw and handle the double. Grade: A-
Redzone Production:
Bolden and
Leonard Pope seemed to be the Cardinals' weapon of choice in the red, however Fitzgerald did produce 10 touchdowns on 2007 and had several good redzone grabs e.g. his 7 yarder against STL in week 5. Grade: B+
Locker Room Chemistry:
Fitzgerald by all indications is a "character guy", and would be a great addition to any locker room. Grade: A
Desire to play for the Eagles:
Fitzgerald did play his college ball in PA, and is on record saying he would love to play with McNabb and Westbrook, however those comments carry a little less weight given that he made similar comments about playing for other teams. Grade: C
Compensation:
The compensation for Fitzgerald would likely be heavy as he is tall, fast, elite and young WR; however, his atypical non-Diva Receiver attitude makes him even more rare. Fitzgerald would likely demand a 3 first day picks +, given the Eagles paradigm of building through the draft that could be problem. Grade: D
Availability:
While Fitzgerald has hinted at a trade it is more than likely that he will remain with a new contract. The only X-factor is the notorious cheapness of the Cardinals organization. Grade: D-
Final Grade: D+, while Larry's attitude, age and skill-set are likely to intrigue the Eagles Front Office, his price tag and unlikely trade-bait status make him a long shot. [/b]
4.
Chad JohnsonAbility to draw Double Coverage:
There is little doubt that 85 is game changer, he may be the biggest drawer of double teams on this list. Grade: A+
Redzone Production:
While Chad has an affinity for the long ball, he has made his share of redzone grabs. While he is not a "jump-baller" e.g. Plaxico Buress, Chad is a formidable red zone threat. Grade: B
Locker Room Chemistry:
Similar to
Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson is polarizing, his brash personality will turn off some and endear others. However, unlike TO, Chad Johnson falls firmly on the Diva hemisphere of the thin line between Diva and Cancer. Grade: C
Desire to play for the Eagles:
If the comments of
Takeo Spikes are accurate Chad Johnson would love to play for the Eagles. However while encouraging it is still just hearsay and cannot be counted as fact. Grade:
Compensation:
The compensation for Chad would likely be a first day pick and a player +. While the Eagles value draft picks greatly, their 2006 trade for Donte Stallworth creates a precedent that puts this within the realm of reality.
Grade: B-
Availability:
Chad is very unhappy in Cincinnati and with super-agent Drew Rosenhaus behind him a trade from the Bengals is a distinct possibility.
Grade: B
Final Grade: C+ Possible but still not extremely likely.
3.
Roy WilliamsAbility to draw Double Coverage:
Williams certainly, while not yet elite in this aspect, draws his share of doubles. Grade: B-
Redzone Production:
Probably the best "Jump Ball" threat available. His Size and hands make Williams an ideal redzone threat. Grade: A
Locker Room Chemistry:
While Williams appears to be have had some minor clashes with coaches, he also is well liked by his teammates. Not
Marvin Harrison but not TO either. Grade: B
Desire to play for the Eagles:
Thus far there is no indication that Williams has a preference to play here. In fact he has made comments that may lead one to believe that he would rather play for the Eagles division rival, the Cowboys. Grade: C-
Compensation:
The compensation for Roy would likely be a second round +, as indicated by several reports. This falls right inline with what The Eagles likely would be willing to give up given their history.
Grade: B-
Availability:
All reports indicate that Roy Williams is indeed on the block.
Grade: A
Final Grade: B, a little less than a 50/50 shot.
2.
Javon WalkerAbility to draw Double Coverage:
Walker is a solid player but is been quite sometime since he has been a player opposing teams had to game plan for. Grade: C
Redzone Production:
While he has shown he can be deadly over the top, Walker has thus far only proved to be an average redzone threat. Grade: C
Locker Room Chemistry:
Certainly has had his diva moments, however most of his skirmishes seem to be with management and not his teammates. Grade: C+
Desire to play for the Eagles:
Walker indicated an interest in coming to the Eagles last time he was on the block. With a need to prove himself again and a limited number of destinations to be a number threat, his desire certainly must be the same or higher than it was before. Grade: B
Compensation:
The compensation for Walker would likely be a midround pick or less.
Grade: A
Availability:
Walker has indicated a desire to be traded and Broncos are likely to grant that wish seeking to get something in return as apposed the alternative, a probable release.
Grade: B+
Final Grade: B, good shot, but not a slam-dunk but.
1.
Donte StallworthAbility to draw Double Coverage:
While not a habitual drawer of double coverage, Stallworth is a homerun threat. Thus, his whereabouts on the field must always be accounted for. Grade: B-
Redzone Production:
Not a huge redzone guy, but has shown good hands and the ability to deliver in the redzone when he's open. Grade: C
Locker Room Chemistry:
Did well in the locker room when he was in Philly despite his messy exit. Grade: B
Desire to play for the Eagles:
Stallworth left Philly because he felt disrespected by management, he has since stated he has moved past the incident and holds no hard feelings. Furthermore, Stallworth wants to be a number one receiver and Philly is only city where he ever achieved that. Grade: C+
Compensation:
With a mammoth Roster bonus due to Stallworth and a formidable payday coming to
Randy Moss, Stallworth will likely hit the open market.
Grade: A+
Availability:
As stated above the priority in New England will be resigning
Randy Moss. Further, Stallworth's replacement
Chad Jackson waits in the wings. Stallworth will likely hit the open market
Final grade: B+ , highly likely.
Most Likey to be an Eagle
1. Stallworth(60/40)
2. Walker (50/50)
3. Roy Williams(30/70)
4. Chad Johnson(10/90)
5.
Larry Fitzgerald(1/99)[/b]
