My guess is that 85% of the people in The Yard have at least one '89 Upper Deck Griffey rookie card. I collected 4, marking both the apex and the beginning of the end of my passion for baseball cards. Not long after that, I started collecting stamps.
Check out this interview with Gilbert Arenas on SI.com. Gilbert is getting more and more comfortable speaking his mind... which I love. And he makes some great points about how he makes his teammates better, and backs it up. Gilbert really studies this stuff... he may be entering a stage of his career marked by confidence and passion, but he's still focused on quieting the haters. Love it.
In case you were looking for a REAL reason to vote for one guy over another next year, here's a look at Barak Obama on the hardwood. Better than Clinton playing saxophone.
Thanks to Mr Irrelevant for this one. Tim Raines and Greg Swindell are eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2008, along with Shawon Dunston and Delino DeShields. If even one of these guys makes it, the value of my baseball card collection will double.
According to one of my favorite sports gossip hounds, Eva Longoria and Tony Parker have called it quits. The timing couldn't be worse for the Spurs, who have relied on the future desperate housewife to provide 100% of the excitement surrounding the team. No word on whether Eva left Tony for the pool boy.
In a recent interview Clemens said that he will only consider pitching jobs with the Astros, Yanks and Red Sox. That's old news. What's nice to see is that these teams are actually showing some self respect (or at least beginning the negotiation early) and not giving Clemens all the power to just stroll onto the team when he pleases. Each team is happy with their current rotation (not sure Houston should be) but they are all saying that for the moment they dont need the Rocket.
Call me old school, but basketball jerseys shouldn't have sleeves, let alone LONG sleeves. The unis that Nike is cladding four tourney teams in remind you of just how much influence the company at One Bowerman Drive has over college sports. Don't laugh, or they'll play this dirty joke on your team.
When I saw the video of the fight during the Buffalo-Ottawa game this week, my first reaction was, "What the hell?! Why is this behavior OK in hockey, but when it happens in the NBA we're talking about bad role models, 20 game suspensions, and community service?" I asked friends to explain NHL fights to me, but I got nothing. This blog post is the best explanation I've seen.
