Notes From the Olympics

Michael Phelps. Usain Bolt. USA Basketball. The games go X. And which sport pedophiles shouldn't be allowed to watch.

Ara Abrahamian Doesn't Act Like A Swede

Swedish wrestler, Ara Abrahamian, didn't act very Swedish during the Olympics, and the Swedes don't seem to care.

If you haven't heard, Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian felt the judges slighted him in his semifinal Olympic match. He got upset and let everyone know about it. With the urging of his friends, he did go on to wrestle, and win, the bronze medal match; but at the medal ceremony he took the

bronze medal from around his neck, laid it in the middle of the mat, and walked away while giving the crowd a nice wave. It was his way of protesting.

A friend of mine, who is a Swedish-American living in Sweden, thought it was a disgraceful thing to do, which ignited a shit storm of negative comments from Swedes on his site. I'm not sure I would go as far to say it was a disgrace. In actuality, I don't really have an opinion about the matter because there could be more to the story than I know about. Maybe the judges screwed him; maybe there has been a history of corruption of in the sport, in which case maybe he did the right thing. But then again, maybe the judges didn't dick him over and his tantrum was for naught. To be honest, I don't care that much to do the research to find out, and if I did, I doubt I could come to a clear consensus anyway. The only way to know for sure is to get inside the heads of those judges.

I was, however, surprised to see how many Swedes went ape-shit in his defense. Like I said, maybe it's warranted, maybe it's not. But having lived in Sweden for a year myself I know this kind of outburst is uncharacteristically Swedish, as was Ara's initial outburst after losing the match. Swedes generally show little emotion, keep their feelings to themselves, and avoid controversy. This whole incident seemed to go against Sweden's unspoken rules of social normalcy.

In any case, I liked it. Not only because it was entertaining as hell, but because it showed me the Swedes might have a little fire in them after all.

Although I will say this, if Ara Abrahamian was a natural born Swede (he was actually born in Armenia and became a Swedish citizen in his twenties) I don't think this would have happened.

NBA on YouTube: Karl Malone & Dennis Rodman

Most remember Jordan's epic shot from the 1998 NBA Finals, but don't forget Karl Malone and Dennis Rodman's epic game of grab-ass.

Boston proves they are legit

Blending big names among one team doesn't always produce the desired results. Boston made it work. Plus Observations from Game 7. The tape delay was in full effect, and there might be another conspiracy going on.

Do you really believe Tim Donaghy?

I love a good conspiracy theory every now and again but I'm having a hard time believing Tim Donaghy's latest accusations.

How does Donaghy hit the NBA where it hurts? By falsely confirming what people have long suspected: that Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals was fixed. It's an easy accusation to make.

What happened at the Belmont? Ask Big Brown

The Kimbo Slice Hype

I've become enamored with all of the Kimbo Slice hype.

For those who don't know, Kimbo Slice is a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter who gained experience and notoriety fighting guys on the streets and having the footage posted on YouTube. Eventually he ran out of guys to fight on the streets to fight, so he turned towards professionals. His first two fights were quick and decisive victories, both ending in the first round. He knocked one guy out and the other tapped out in submission. (In MMA pretty much everything goes; all styles of fighting are included, hence the name. Sometimes guys find themselves in situations where the only thing for them to do is tap out or pass out. This is a submission.)

It's a nice story with elements of humble beginnings (about as humble as they can get for a fighter named Kimbo Slice), stuff the media eats up. The "legend continued" on Saturday during his third fight. He won, but he didn't dominate like he did in his two previous fights. In those fights his opponents were mediocre at best. His opponent for the third fight, James "The Colossus" Thompson, an Englishman from Manchester, was better than anyone Kimbo had fought before. The fight lasted three rounds, ending in a TKO when the referee intervened to end the fight after Kimbo landed a barrage of fierce punches that left Thompson confused.

But haters are going to hate. Many say Slice showed his weakness and the hype is not validated. That may be true, you can judge for yourself, but there is a lot left to be seen before we can come to our ultimate conclusions. It's obvious Kimbo has work to do if he wants to be the best fighter. After the first two rounds Thompson was winning the fight while having his way with Kimbo on the ground for much of the second round. Kimbo has acknowledged as much during his post-fight interview. Kimbo is a menacing standup fighter, but there is the added element of ground fighting he has to overcome in the MMA.

But let's not forget who won the fight. Some might say the referee intervened too early, I say it's a good thing he did. Nothing good was going to come for Thompson by having the fight continue. Kimbo was about to tee off on his skull. Luckily the referee stepped in before he was messed up for good.

I didn't even see the latest fight live. (More interesting about this fight is that it was aired on a major television network, CBS. When was the last time a highly anticipated fight didn't cost $50 on Pay-Per-View? Very cool.) I saw replays on ESPN News showing a guy with a bad case of cauliflower ear being knocked sensless by one of the meanest guys I'd ever seen. After that I did a little research and watched several of his fights (both the sanctioned MMA fights and his street fights) on YouTube and found out the reason for the hype.

Not only is this guy a badass, he was once homeless. He has six kids. He was a star high school football player who didn't play in college but tried out for the Miami Dolphins. He briefly attended the University of Miami on an academic scholarship. He has scars from Hurricane Andrew. He was a bouncer for a strip club and the bodyguard of a porn production company. He started fighting neighborhood bullies, became an internet sensation, and turned professional. No wonder why people have become interested. It's a hell of a story. Of course people are going to hype it up.

Kimbo Slice and Mixed Martial Arts are changing the way people think about fighting. Both defy tradition and have found success in roundabout ways. Subsequently both have their fair share of critics. Irregardless of whether you love 'em or hate 'em, they are making people talk. That should count for something.

As long as I'm entertained, I'll be watching.

Quit Complaining

I love the NBA as much as the next fan, but something has been bothering me lately - too much bitching at the officials. Let it go.

The Lakers are still Showtime, but, despite their label, the Spurs aren't boring. This is a series to get excited about.
