Fantasy Football Updates for the week...given in bikini

While I love to get fantasy reports, I love them even more when the reporter is wearing a bikini. She's hot, but not too entertaining, so just watch it for what it's worth.

Bengals' Chad Ocho Cinco is now formerly known as Chad Johnson

Well, in another feeble attempt to keep his name in the media, Chad Johnson has legally changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco. Don't believe me? Check it: "Effective today, the Bengals begin the process of listing the former Chad Johnson as Chad Ocho Cinco for all club business, per the legal change of his surname effected in Florida. The list of appropriate changes will include the player wearing the name Ocho Cinco on the back of his jersey for Sunday's season opener at Baltimore."

VT changes mind: Taylor to play, not redshirt

Well that was quick. After stating that sophomore QB Tyrod Taylor would redshirt this season and senior Sean Glennon will be the starting QB, Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer changed his mind after a season opening loss to unranked East Carolina. Glennon, who went---23 for 139 yards and 2 INT's, will share duties with the more mobile Taylor who gives the Hokies a better chance to move the ball behind a porous O-Line. I just don't get this thinking, after one game in which Glennon struggled, but the decision about Taylor's redshirt had to be a thought out one that wouldn't be changed after just one game! I don't like Beamer's flip in thought, but I guess he's trying to get the Hokies to play better after that bad start.

Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh lose a match! 112 match winning streak over!

The USA Gold medalists Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor were finally brought back to reality after losing a match for the first time in 112 competitions. The loss comes on the heal of the Olympic Games where the two were pretty much unbeatable, as they have been for the past 112 matches. Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh beat them in a tournament in Mason, Ohio. I'm pretty surprised, but I guess that's what sports are all about, you need to play the game to make sure.

Merriman continues to prove that he's an idiot, will play with 2 torn ligaments

The San Diego Chargers should deactivate Shawne Merriman before he ruins his career and wastes the millions the Chargers are paying him. The man is psycho, this is not about showing heart or being a man, this is about doing what's right for your career, body, and the team that employs you. Merriman has been told by 5 doctors, including a team doc, that he should have season ending surgery to repair 2 torn ligaments in his knee. Instead, he does what every man would do, he defies specialists' opinions and says "I'm going to play, I'll deal with it when it's time to get surgery." Good call Shawne, I'll see you on the sideline after Week 1 with swelling.

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel to USC: LA football monopoly is over

UCLA hired embattled coach Rick Neuheisel to take over the Bruins and to rebuild them into a legit program. He's started off well, luring away former USC and Tennessee Titans O-Coordinator Norm Chow and not backing down from the obvious challenges of rebuilding UCLA when USC is raping LA for every recruit. However, he may have overstepped his bounds today after purchasing an ad in the LA Times newspaper saying "The Football monopoly in LA is officially OVER". This is a direct shot at Pete Carroll and USC, and as much as I hate the Trojans, this may be a bit premature for UCLA because I'll be surprised if they even finish .500 this season. I'm supportive of what Neuheisel is trying to do to change the culture at UCLA, but they can't compete with USC yet.

Eagles' rookie DeSean Jackson runs back punt for TD vs. Pats

Former Cal WR DeSean Jackson had his first punt return for a TD for the Eagles vs. the Patriots in a preseason game. This is exactly the reason why the Eagles drafted the speedy WR from the Golden Bears, but it remains to be seen what he can do as a WR in the NFL. I think he'll be fine, but this was an exciting start.

Oregon QB Nate Costa out 8-10 weeks with knee injury

After losing all-everything QB Dennis Dixon last year, the Ducks went into a tailspin and nosedived their way through the rest of the 2007-08 season. Now, with Dixon graduated, they turn to a bigger version of Dixon in Nate Costa. Unfortunately for the Ducks, Costa was injured last season so he couldn't play when Dixon went down, but was expected to be the starter on day 1 now. Well, the injury bug keeps hitting the Ducks as Costa is now going to miss 8-10 weeks with cartilage damage to the same surgically repaired knee. What will the Ducks do now? Looks like Justin Roper will get the start in the opener, and probably play the rest of the season unless he screws up.

Matt Leinart benched in favor of Kurt Warner

Well another high profile college QB and high draft pick has been benched in favor of a veteran, this time it's former USC QB and current Cardinals QB Matt Leinart. Leinart was benched after the horrendous showing against the Raiders yesterday, going 4-12 with 3 INT's in limited action. The Cardinals, also concerned with Leinart's arm strength and consistency, have gone with former Rams MVP Kurt Warner to lead the team, again. I don't get the flip flop that consistently happens with the Cardinals, but it just sucks that they drafted this guy so high and now he's a bust, like Alex Smith of the Niners and Kyle Boller of the Ravens.

Cuban taekwondo Champ suspended for life after kicking a ref

After being disqualified by the ref, Cuban champion Angel Valodia Matos kicked the ref in the head! The IOC has suspended both he and Matos' coach FOR LIFE after the incident, which stemmed from the ref's disqualification call after he stated Matos took more than a minute during rounds, grounds for immediate disqualification. That's just hilarious, but I'm sure the ref isn't laughing.

NBA wants to create league in China, what?

This may be the step to create an international league of basketball, as the NBA talks about creating a league in China. With the recent trend of middle-NBAers migrating to Europe, the game of basketball has grown global very quickly. The NBA's response to this potentially devastating trend is to create a league in China, in the hopes of one day perhaps creating an international league with the NBA, EuroLeague, and China. It's a fiscally lucrative deal, but will the NBA really go through with it? Where is the future of basketball headed?

Kyle Orton is going to start over sexy Rexy, O'Sullivan over Smith

The Chicago Bears are on par with the San Francisco 49ers as having the worst QB situation, but it looks like the two underdogs are going to prevail in each competition. Former starters Rex Grossman and Alex Smith will probably be sitting on the bench watching Kyle Orton and JT O'Sullivan lead their offense. I guess it's not that big of a deal for Grosssman, because he was a good QB at Florida but nothing special, and Orton was a top Heisman candidate at Purdue before bombing the final 1/4 of his senior season. However, for former #1 pick and $50 million man Alex Smith, he's losing his job to a career backup and former UC Davis QB JT O'Sullivan (nothing against Davis, a good D-I AA team, but that's not big time football).

Ryan Lochte wins gold, check it out

Another gold medal for the US swim team, this time not Michael Phelps. Florida's Ryan Lochte earned gold in the 200 meter backstroke while setting a new world record, and fellow American Aaron Piersol (winner of the 100 meter back) finished second. Finally able to step out of the shadow of Michael Phelps, Lochte has to feel very happy for accomplishing such a feat.

USA Swimming's Hoff & Ziegler fail to advance in 800 meter free

The Olympics have not been golden for every US swimmer thus far, and one of the bigger disappointments has been the swimming of "superstar" Katie Hoff. Now, the point of this is not to bash a good swimmer, she's obviously very talented in making the Olympics and garnering the type of hype that she has. However, she has largely underwhelmed viewers in her performances, failing to net a single gold medal in 5 individual events and leaving Beijing with a silver and two bronze's. She was, unfairly, hyped as a female version of Michael Phelps, and perhaps the hype got to her. She was poised to win gold in one of the free events, but literally died on the last leg after leading the whole way. It's unfortunate that her games ended this way, but hey, she's still an Olympian and one of the fastest in the pool in the world; just not as fast as everybody thought she was. I hope she sticks with it and makes it back for one more Olympics in 2012.

China winning gold medal count, USA leads total medals

As the first week of the Olympics continues, China is well on its way to accomplishing their goal of winning the most gold medals in these Games. China has 13 golds already, while the US trails them with 7, 3 of which belong to Michael Phelps, 1 to Natalie Coughlin, 1 to Aaron Piersol, 1 to Individual Fencing, and the final one to...I don't remember. Anyway, the US will challenge China for the overall count and gold count, but right now China is winning that battle. We still have Track & Field though, so watch out for the USA to dominate there.
