Thiago Alves dropps the ball...

Alves failed to make weight for his bout against Matt Hughes on June 7th. Fortunately the fight will still happen at a catch weight of 174lbs. Everyone else has officially made weight.

MMA fans

I was just at the past WEC event and I was pretty disappointed with the fans of Sacramento. They were so quick to boo the athletes. It was as if there were ten thousand "Just Bleed Guys" in attendance. Its so frustrating hearing people boo or talk as if they can actually fight any better than the two in the cage. Behind me was a typical drunk girl shouting out obscenities and words of encouragement for Razor Rob like "go whitey!" And spewing ignorant comments like how "black guys aren't good wrestlers." She would constantly drop names of her trainers like Tim Mckenzie and Scotty Smith. The worse was when she was commenting on someone's guard she said "Oh wow he has a really good guard" meanwhile his guard was completely open, the other athlete just wasn't trying to pass. The drunk guys to their left were placing dollar bets based on the fighters ethnicity, and would refer to them by the color of their shorts. There was also another fight that wasn't scheduled on the card, this fight took place in the crowd. Another thing I was amazed by was the amount of monster trucks in the parking lot. My brother and I were in his little four cylinder Suzuki looking like a baby in a sea of giants. Maybe thats just how people are in Sacramento, being from San Jose I'm more open minded and liberal so maybe I just don't get it up there. There were a few cool people in front of me and to my right. Very intelligent MMA fans who I enjoyed sitting next to. If it wasn't for them, I could have had a miserable experience while watching some great fights. Its just sad that the "bad" MMA fans are much louder than the "good" MMA fans, I just wish they would be more respectful to the athletes and the sport.

Starstuck at WEC

I recently attended the WEC event this past sunday and never have I seen so many MMA stars in attendance. I saw Chuck Liddell run right past my isle shaking hands taking pictures embracing every crazy Sacramento fan that wanted a piece of the former UFC light heavy weight champ. I saw Dana White, Anderson Silva, Clay Guida, Stephan Bonar, Josh Thompson, Tito Ortiz, Bo Cantrell haha, Doug Marshal, and those are just the ones I saw I'm sure there were more there. Everyone star was more than happy to stop what they were doing and take a picture, sign a shirt, or even just have a conversation with who ever stopped them. MMA athletes are simply the best athletes in the world. They give back to their fans more than any sport. I remember going to an A's training game in Arizona when I was a kid. I saw Mark McGuire, Jose Canseco etc. And neither one of them took the time to sign my baseball or even just look at me and give a simple wave. MMA is by far the best sport and I love it more than any other sport in the world.

Likes and Dislikes for the EliteXC's CBS broadcast

Likes:

Introduction was good, no Pride intro but still good.

The announce team was good. Any time I hear Mauro is a good night of fights.

Explanation of the rules with Frank Shamrock was good.

Phil Baroni's ring entrance was great, it took almost ten minutes for him to get to the ring. And every second of it was great! His robe was spectacular too.

Commercial for Street Fighter IV. Should be Street Fighter 7,939 but who's counting? There were a lot of commercials but it should be expected. Just remember, you're getting to see a great card for free. How can you complain about that?

The quality of the video interviews was great.

I like the fact that they didn't shy away from the fact that Gina did not make weight and has to share about 12 percent of her purse to Kaitlin Young.

Garry Shaw's response to the Lawler and Smith's fight, giving both fighters their winning purse is very nice and shows how well EliteXC treats their athletes.

I love James Thompson's pump action thing he does.

Dislikes:

Introductions are too long. We don't need to know who the judges are for the under card bouts. Only the main event and co-main event should have that kind of build up. We also don't need to see the ref read the rules to the under card fights. Theres nothing impressive with Rogers and Murphy's stare down. Get rid of the whole build up, people just want these fights to go end as fast as possible so they can see the main event.

The EliteXC girls have to go. I have no desire to see rhythm less girls prance around as if they can dance.

Gina's nick name "Conviction"... enough said. Another thing I don't like how they allow Gina's dad into the cage at the end of each of her fights. All for sappy TV ratings, complete and utter BS. You don't see them allowing Willa Ford in the octagon when Chuck Liddell destroyed Tito Ortiz.

The fans in attendance, the lack of respect they show for the fighters is unbelievable. But thats not EliteXC's fault.

The way the Lawler vs Smith fight ended was very unfortunate, the doctor asked Smith if he could see and his response was "I cant see right now, give me my five minutes and I'll be okay." Being a doctor, you shouldn't tell them you can't see. I understand why the doctor stopped the fight, but they should have allowed him his five minutes.

James Thompson's ears, need I say more?

I definitely don't like how close the camera men get when they're announcing the fighters. I don't want to look up Kimbo's nose and see whats up there.

The ref's performance in the Kimbo vs Thompson fight. Kimbo took a lot of shots and did not block any of them in the second round, then decides to stop the fight after James Thompson gets rocked early in the third round.

I didn't like how abruptly they ended the TV broadcast.

All in all it was a good card. Nothing spectacular but definitely not a bad card. A few bad calls but a good effort by CBS and EliteXC. I cant wait for next time...

EliteXC recap (SPOILERS)

-Recap-

Jon Murphy vs. Brett Rogers

Round 1:

Bell sounds for the first MMA fight on prime time TV. Two fighters feel each other out for a few seconds then clinch up. Some good knees to the body by Rogers. They separate, Murphy comes back with a few swings and Rogers counters with a right hook that drops Jon Murphy with three minutes and fifty nine seconds left in the first round.

Phil Baroni vs Joey Villasenor

Round 1:

Good action in the beginning. Baroni gets villasenor lands some good shots on the ground. Villasenor gets up trades with Baroni. Baroni gets caught with a left hook, Baroni backs up goes for a shoot. Villasenor sprawls gets a guillotine. Baroni gets out, Villasenor rocks Baroni with a need and a couple more shots. Baroni falls to a knee and Villasenor gets a TKO in the first round.

Gina Carano vs. Kaitlin Young

Round 1:

Nice front kicks by Gina. Gina takes Young down. They stand up and break. Nice right by Carano, Young lands a solid right of her own. Young ties up Gina and takes her down. Gina is working for a gogoplata!!! Kaitlin works out of the gogo and lets Gina get up. Nice trading of punches between the two athletes before the round ends. I give Gina the first round 10-9, although it was very close and I wouldn't be surprised if Kaitlin won it.

Round 2:

More trading of strikes, punches, kicks and knees. Kaitlin is working the leg kicks very well. Carano is landing good combos with kicks and punches. Young gets rocked with a nice combo. Young looks tired, backing up and getting rocked. Carano is teeing off but looks tired herself. Carano lands a front kick and drops Kaitlin. Gina takes her back and sinks in a rear naked choke with less than ten seconds to go in the first. Kaitlin holds on and survives the second round. I give that round to Gina 10-9. Kaitlin can not continue to the third round. Gina wins with a TKO at the end of round 2. Great fight, just goes to show how much heart the females of MMA have.

Robbie Lawler vs Scott Smith

Round 1:

Bell sounds they miss to touch hands twice and finally succeed. Scott throws two high kicks that Robbie blocks with ease. Both fighters are hesitant to engage. Fans grow restless as a minute goes by with no action. Smith lunges and gets clipped and now looks a little stunned. Robbie comes in with a kick and throws a combo that doesn't do much. Robbie backs off and takes the center of the cage. Scott throws a nice head kick Robbie stays in there and lands some good punches. The flurry ends and now Lawler is controlling smith with some close punches. Robbie is landing jabs over and over trying to set Scott up for an uppercut. Nice left kick to the ribs followed with a right hook, Lawler says "no, we're not done yet" and keeps Scott alive for a few more minutes. I believe Robbie is trying to get a hi-lite reel KO out of Scott Smith.. Robbie wins 10-8.

Round 2:

Lawler throwing combos, taking his time finding his range. Another hard left kick to the ribs of Scott by Robbie. Scott throwing right head kicks, still showing hes in there to fight. Lawler closing in, gets caught with a left hook. Both fighters appear to be taking their time. Scott clinches up with Lawler landing good knees to the head. Scott is throwing good punches, Lawler rides the wave and clinches up with Scott to slow things down. Lawler lands some good shots using dirty boxing. Both fighters working hard with elbows and body blows. Scott is throwing good tight standing elbows. Lawler is cut on top of the head by some good elbows by Scott Smith. It feels as if the tide has turned and Scott Smith is throwing more and gaining more confidence. Round two ends, I give that round to Scott Smith 10-9.

round 3:

Smith starts the round with a leg kick. Lawler is letting his right hand hang too low too often. Robbie is taking his time trying to close the distance. Lawler is starting to establish his jab. Robbie lands a couple standing elbows, no major damage. Lawler shoots, Scott stuffs it with a good sprawl. Lawler reverses and gets Scott's back briefly before they break. Robbie throws a combo and lands an accidental finger in Scott Smith's left eye. Doctor comes in, looks at Smith and calls an end to the fight. Scott doesn't want it to end, Robbie feels bad and the crowd, in typical MMA fan reaction, chants "BULL S**T, BULL S**T." Sad ending to a fight that was looking to be a candidate for fight of the year. Judges gave the first round to Robbie Lawler and the second round to the hands of steel Scott Smith. The official result of the bout is in the third round at three minutes and twenty three seconds a "no contest" due to the fact that it did not go Three full rounds.

Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson

Round 1:

Thompson tries to get a take down, Kimbo lands good knees to the body. Thompson gets Kimbo down and is in Kimbo's guard. Kimbo pushes Thompson off, only to get taken down again. Kimbo is doing well and preventing damage. Thompson passes to side control, but lets Kimbo get up. Solid Grecko Roman wrestling going on against the cage. Thompson looks like he has a guillotine on Kimbo. Kimbo puts up the "thumbs up" to let the ref know hes okay, Kimbo throws knees to try to get out. Kimbo is out. Slice gets cause charging in with a leg kick that throws him off balance. Kimbo takes Thompson down and manages to get a neck crank then falls down. Thompson has Kimbo in a crucifix and looking for the kimura. Kimbo sweeps Thompson and gets in his half guard. Thompson gets Kimbo in his guard and rides out the rest of the round. Close round, I give it to Thompson 10-9. he got more take downs, but it was so close it could go either way.

Round 2:

Thompson goes for a double leg, Kimbo sprawls. Kimbo lands a good punch that rocks Thompson a little. Thompson gets caught in a guillotine but Kimbo doesn't lock his guard and Thompson gets out and is now on top of Kimbo. Now in side control, with no action the ref stands them up. Kimbo lands a good combo and Thompson is wobbly Kimbo is now picking his shots on a tired James Thompson. Kimbo tries to get yet another guillotine but Thompson gets on and is now in Kimbo's half guard. Thompson is landing soft punches to Kimbo's face, only scoring points. Thompson traps Kimbo's right arm with his knee and lands countless elbows and punches and Kimbo cant block any of them. The ref is letting this fight go on a long time. Kimbo rides out the rest of the round. I think James Thompson stole the round 10-9

round 3:

Kimbo looks tired as the final round comes to a start. Kimbo lands a big right hand that rocked Thompson and popped his left ear. Thompson is rocked and the ref stops the fight. In thirty eight seconds in the third round.

Good card, unfortunate that there were a few bad calls but thats MMA.

Diaz bout is ON again...

Apparently Nick Diaz IS going to Japan to fight former King of Pancrace Katsuya Inoue. After getting rescheduled from the April 29th Dream card to May 11th, Diaz was then pulled from the card by Pro Elite's Gary Shaw due to the fight being too close to Diaz's EliteXC fight in Hawaii on June 14th. Diaz was then put back on the card only to be pulled just a few days ago. However Diaz's trainer Cesar Gracie, has reported that Nick Diaz will be heading to Japan soon to fight this Sunday. Only time will tell if the all the distractions will take an effect Diaz's mental state.

Any thought about this whole crazy situation?

Zuffa makes more cuts

After their previous loss's Din Thomas, Tommy Spears and Kuniyoshi Hironaka have all been dropped from the Zuffa roster. I can understand Spears being cut for his lackluster performance against Anthony Johnson at the UFC Fight Night 13. Hironaka lost to some tough competitors like John Fitch and Thiago Alves, but with his previous loss to Jonathan Goulet I thought he put on a somewhat exciting performance. As for Din Thomas, theres no reason he should be let go. He lost to Kenny Florian where he suffered a critical knee injury then came back only to lose a decision to Josh Neer.

Josh Barnett vs Pedro Rizzo II

Affliction has announced another fight for their July 19th debut. Barnett will get his chance for revenge against Pedro Rizzo. Their first encounter was held at UFC 30 "Battle on the Boardwalk" on Feb 23, 2001. It ended with Rizzo getting a KO over the Baby Faced Assassin at 4:21 in the second round. Do you think Pedro "The Rock" Rizzo can repeat, or does the Baby Faced Assassin take him apart?

Diaz out of Sunday's Dream

Apparently Gary Shaw didn't learn about Nick Diaz's participation in the Dream event on May 11th till the match was already made. Since Diaz is scheduled to fight Muhsin Corbbrey on June 14th, Gary didn't want to take any chances to lose yet another fight in the last minute.

Heres a video of Jeremy Horn vs Dean Lister fighting for the first time in a 4 round light heavy weight championship match under King of the Cage 31 (12/6/03)

What do you think of the fight? Do you think this is how their upcoming fight at the TUF finale on 06/21/2008 will go?

Lutter released from UFC

Can't be too surprised by this, after not making weight and getting submitted by Anderson Silva. Then gassing out and suffering a TKO due to strikes in the second round against Rich Franklin. Joe Silva has decided to release Travis Lutter (9-5). With all five loses being in the UFC, I don't see Travis Lutter being allowed back.

McCarthy hangs up the gloves

After his last fight against Michael "The Count" Bisping, McCarthy has decided to retire. Maybe he'll be a better trainer than a fighter, only time will tell.
