Completing a living dex—short for living Pokedex; i.e. collecting every Pokemon in the Pokedex—requires so much effort, and doing a shiny version of it cranks the difficulty level to high. Thus, it’s no wonder why popular Pokemon GO YouTuber JT Valor took five-plus years to complete his Johto shiny living dex in Pokemon GO.

A Very Long 5+ Years For a Johto Shiny Living Dex in Pokemon GO

Completing a shiny living dex is a pretty difficult task considering you need multiple shiny encounters of a Pokemon on top of literally catching them all. Sometimes, just completing a normal living dex can also get pretty expensive in some generations of the Pokemon franchise.

For Pokemon GO YouTuber JT Valor, his goal to complete a shiny living dex in Pokemon GO is still an ongoing endeavor. However, he has completed three shiny living dexes so far, and the Johto version was his latest accomplishment.

JT Valor’s Johto Shiny Living Dex Highlights

In his five-plus-year journey, JT Valor’s Johto shiny living dex got the Pokemon GO YouTuber traveling to many places in the world and participating in a lot of in-game events. Thus, his Johto shiny living dex collection features some pretty impressive Pokemon.

Here are some of his impressive catches and feats for his Johto shiny living dex:

  • A collection of shiny shadow Pokemon featuring Crobat, Pineco, Forretress, and Stantler.
  • A regional shiny Pokemon via a shiny Corsola that was caught through a raid.
  • Catching a shiny Entei for his 1,000th raid.
  • A shiny Houndoom from a mega raid.
  • A trio of shiny costumed Pokemon featuring a shiny Santa Hat Pichu, a Party Hat Wobbuffet, and a Flower Crown Blissey.
  • A Ho-Oh that is a shundo—short for a shiny hundo; hundo being a term for a Pokemon with 100% IVs.
  • A shiny Tyranitar that is a nundo—a term for a Pokemon with zero percent IVs; the complete opposite of a hundo.
  • Hatching two shiny Elekids while at work.

Of course, catching every single Pokemon in the Johto Pokedex for a shiny living dex collection is impressive enough on its own.

The Difficulty of a Complete Johto Shiny Living Dex

As we have repeatedly pointed out already in this article, a completed shiny living dex is a very, very, very difficult feat to do. If it has not sunk in yet, JT Valor’s feat of completing a shiny Johto living dex in Pokemon GO is one of the game’s most difficult personal challenges. Additionally, Pokemon GO’s method of slowly releasing Pokemon makes completing a living dex take years of grinding.

In fact, the second generation of Pokemon only debuted in Pokémon GO in February 2017, with the first shiny Pokemon variants, Magikarp and Gyarados, appearing a month later. Then, the first shiny Johto Pokémon introduced was a Shiny Pichu in August of that same year at a Pokémon GO Park event in Yokohama, Japan.

Unfortunately for JT Valor and the rest of the players attempting to complete shiny Johto living dexes themselves, their shiny Johto living dexes would technically not be considered truly completed ones at the time of this article’s writing as there are still unreleased shiny variants of the Pokemon Unown, such as the shiny Unown (K) and shiny Unown (Q) forms.

Fans React to JT Valor’s Johto Shiny Living Dex

With JT Valor’s achievement, his community of viewers rejoiced in his completion of the Johto shiny living dex. Here are some of the comments that were posted in his YouTube video’s comments section.

“Great video! And must have taken so much time to stitch all those old vids together, cheers!”

“Nice job that is just amazing JT”

“Congrats JT! What a huge accomplishment!!”

“Love your content! Continue your good work! Hope to see more vids soon!!

“You are an absolute grind road warrior, I admire your dedication to the game.”

Furthermore, given the amount of time JT Valor took to complete his shiny living dex, some of his viewers can’t help but feel nostalgic about some of the clips he included in his video.

“Real OGs know what that shiny Mantine reaction was all about

“Very cool seeing the old clips where some of the shinies didn’t even have the shiny icon on the name and the egg animations worked!”

“Definitely a throwback to see a few of those sparkle with no shiny symbol, lol.”

“One of my favorite things to show how long it’s taken, is some of the shinies (like Natu) are old enough there is no shiny symbol above the name”

“Love to see how far you’ve come! especially your hair changing color

Given it has been quite a long journey, when asked if he has lost his passion for the game, JT Valor simply responded that he is “definitely good” despite viewing the recent updates being a bit so-so for the most part.

JT Valor’s Other Pokemon GO Shiny Living Dexes

Besides completing the Gen 2 shiny living dexes, JT Valor also managed to complete two other shiny living dexes to date. Earlier this year, he also managed to complete the shiny living dexes for Generation 1’s Kanto Pokemon and Generation 3’s Hoenn Pokemon.

In his Gen 3 completion video, JT Valor revealed he managed to complete the Hoenn living dex first before the Johto version, and the reason for that was because of the Unowns thereby proving how difficult it was to complete the Johto region’s living dex.

When asked by a viewer about at which point he plans to retire in Pokemon GO, JT Valor admits a day will come when he will be closing the game for the last time but he then follows it up by stating that day is still far in the future as he thinks there is still quite a few more things for him to get in Pokemon GO.
