Holiday Leftovers
So like the turkey and gravy you get the next day, here is my overdue blog from the holidays...its like an award winning film, i'm giving it to you in pieces:
Holidays are the time we spend with our families collecting cherished moments (like my mom trying to kick me out from the day I got home..."you better start packing to make sure everything fits!"). So, I was excited to head back to Baton Rouge to see my family. But this holiday wasn't going to just be about fun- it was also going to be a lot of work! Who am I kidding though…Its always fun with the augustus family! seymore (my father) always gets his jokes in around the holidays (I think he saves up from thanksgiving on – you know, the line you wished you used? He saves them for Christmas). When he knows its close for me to time for me to come home he calls all of the family and friends and tell them "Queen Seimone is coming home." And believe me, I look forward to it. Finally time to eat some home cooked meals! Seymore claims my mom never cooks when I'm gone, but when I come home she cooks all of my favorite food. Being the Queen ain't half bad. This holiday I hosted my basketball clinic and had some other work type obligations -- like doing a Better Basketball instructional video shoot. From the time my plane hit the ground I was working preparing the gift bags and sorting t shirts for the camp…as well follow up with all of the sponsors that said they were going donate things. Once that was settled, I enjoyed every bit of food I could bc once I get back to Russia, oooh child…there ain't no eating like in louisiana. We had everything you could imagine to eat. I was also blessed to be able to visit both of my great-grandmothers Ms. Jesse Mae and Ms. Mary Weston. To see my great grandmothers getting around and doing well at there age made me not even want to complain when my body aches a little. I hope that when I am their age that I can get around just as well. So back to camp -- it was exciting from start to finish. Those kids were SO excited. The clinic was free - folks just had to bring canned good to benefit a local foodbank - Streams of LIfe. They're the foodbank that worked with Feed the Children to help me supply over 400 underserved BR families with food and supplies for a bit, so it was nice to help bring them some resources. As for the hoop portion, I had help from my alma mater capitol high's squad and some friends of the family to help run the different stations. We covered defense, free throws, ball handling, and passing. I walked around and observed everything and you can just TELL the little ones would get nerves or try extra hard when I was at there station. Which of course, was very cute and it made me incredibly proud of all the work I had done to deserve the kids' admiration. Once the stations were done then we did a free throw contest and suicide-sprint races. While there were a few good shots, the suicide run was the best. Man, these kids ran there heart out and when it came down to the finals we ended at a tie: a young gurl and a young boy! That little girl was getting it. She is little, but she might just be a star. It was great to see both of them so competitive that they did not want to go home with a tie! they wanted a clear cut winner. Unfortunately, watching them run had made me tired enough to call it, so both walked away winners – sporting signed Seimone Lynx bobbleheads! Once the camp was done I took a few pictures and handed out the gift bags, did a raffle (for the record, you have never seen kids go crazy like they did for the gift certificates to McDonalds and Raising Canes!)… Next post, my sexy photoshoot in New Orleans, the Hornets/Cavs game, Hazel & Co., my Better Basketball Shoot and **sigh***…a long trip back to Russia. PEACE!
