There are still some questions remaining over his possible deal. Would the Munguia fight be on Amazon Prime Video or DAZN? This is crucial given that PBC recently signed their multi-year deal with Amazon. Losing Canelo would severely damage their relationship with Amazon, who want the biggest names since their subscriber base is over 160 million in the US alone.

In addition, the news also means a David Benavidez fight could still be on. Benavidez has made it clear that he is unwilling to leave PBC to chase Canelo. But if Alvarez remains with PBC, it increases the chances of a new deal being made. There were suggestions that PBC wanted to include Benavidez in Canelo’s three-fight deal by changing the terms, which is why Canelo announced his departure. But fans could see that all-Mexican clash if a new agreement is made. As of now, Mike Coppinger says talks are still ongoing despite Salvador Rodriguez’s comments.

Canelo vs Munguia

“Canelo Alvarez and PBC discussing a Jaime Munguia fight May 4 after sides split last week with two fights left on three-fight deal signed in June, sources tell ESPN. If deal is reached, this would be a new pact. Canelo was discussing two-fight deal with DAZN for fights with Munguia and Edgar Berlanga before he re-engaged with PBC. Could be for one fight, could be for two. Nothing signed yet,” Coppinger stated 

Eddie Hearn also echoed those comments. DAZN was seen as the next destination following Canelo’s departure. A fight with Munguia and Edgar Berlanga were mentioned as two possible opponents. But since Amazon Prime is arguably a bigger platform in the US, it makes sense for Alvarez to secure the biggest purses. He is in the latter part of his career and can command the fights he wants. When Hearn was asked about Canelo’s future, he remained coy about his next steps.

“I don’t think it’s official yet; we’ll have to see. Obviously, he’s with PBC, isn’t he? I don’t know how that contract sits. Was it a three-fight deal? I know Munguia is a DAZN fighter, so I’m not sure how that’ll play out with Golden Boy. We’ll see what plays out,” Hearn stated 

With less than two months to go before Cinco De Mayo, it is vital that Canelo’s next opponent is announced soon.
