Deontay Wilder has had a very impressive track record. He has been unbeaten in his first 43 bouts. He also obtained the WBC championship and magnificently defended the title 10 times. Wilder, has lost four of five.
The first two defeats came against Wilder's greatest opponent, Tyson Fury. Wilder got back in the victory column with a first-round knockout of Robert Helenius in 2022. The Helenious defeat was Wilder's 42nd in 43 career wins.
'The Bronze Bomber' had an extensive reign as WBC titleholder before losing his crown in a dramatic rematch loss to Tyson Fury in 2020. Therefore, after back-to-back poor performances, it appeared as if former heavyweight titlist Deontay Wilder could walk away from boxing for good. Instead, he is booked to return to the ring on June 27 to fight Tyrrell Herndon in Wichita, Kansas.
A consequent loss to Joseph Parker in 2023, along with the Zhang defeat, had resulted in questions about Wilder's future in boxing. Further, the former ex-champion Carl Froch is confused as to why the ‘Bronze Bomber’ is still wanting to fight.
“I don't know what Deontay Wilder is doing, to be honest. Ferocious puncher back in the day. His natural power is gone and at heavyweight, if you can't punch when you're only 15 stone, your punch power is gone and your punch resistance is gone. You’re getting in the ring knowing you’re getting f***ing sparked out. You’re getting ironed out. Why are you still fighting? It makes you question if he needs the money which is a shame because he’s been involved in some big fights,” said Froch during an interview with the CasinoBeats.
