Crawford’s Coach Picks Fundora To KO Spence
Sipa USA

Terence Crawford’s coach, Bernie Davis, expects Sebastian Fundora to beat Errol Spence Jr in today’s boxing news.

Reports indicate that Spence will box Fundora in October at 154 pounds. It will be his first fight since Crawford stopped him last year. Spence was dropped three times, as Crawford became the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. The rematch broke down as Spence received cataract surgery on his right eye.

This will be Spence’s first fight at 154 as he chases Fundora’s WBC belt. Spence has hinted that this could be his last fight. He is not getting any younger at 34 and has been punished a lot. Outside of the Crawford defeat, he was involved in two car crashes. Therefore, the fact that he is taking on Fundora for a title shot in his first fight since the Crawford loss has surprised people.

Fundora is also a hard-hitting puncher known for fighting on the inside. That will expose Spence to more damage if he cannot gain Fundora’s respect. Since it is a new weight class, Spence is taking a risk. Davies expects Fundora to come out on top.

Fundora vs. Spence

“I got Fundora. I don’t see Spence being a dominant junior middleweight. He’s got good name value. I don’t think he hits as hard as Tim Tszyu. I’m picking Fundora in that fight. I don’t think he’s got one-punch KO power. I don’t see him dominating against these guys. [And] I could see the ‘Towering Inferno’ [Fundora] loading up on him and hitting him with the kitchen sink. Maybe a little sympathy. I think he still has got more to give. I don’t know how dominant he’ll be, but I still think he has a lot more to give,” Davies said

If Spence were to come out victorious, there is a narrative in place to run things back. Crawford will box Israil Madrimov on August 3. That is for Madrimov’s WBA Junior Middleweight Title. A victory makes Crawford a four-division champion and creates a potential narrative for a rematch with Spence. Crawford has expressed his desire to become undisputed in a third weight class.

Having beaten Spence already, he will fancy his chances. If a Spence fight does not happen at 154, Crawford could move up to 168. That would allow him to fight for undisputed by facing Canelo Alvarez. Crawford is 37, and he is targeting the biggest fights in the late stage of his career. And putting Spence in with Crawford may be too much of a risk for PBC. With the increasing number of fighters leaving PBC, they must manage their best fighters. But Sanders felt Spence had no chance.

“He already accomplished a lot. If he chooses to retire, that’s on him. He probably is going to retire if Fundora beats [him]. Fundora is going to beat his [him]. I don’t see him beating Fundora. You got Crawford around. I might as well quit. I might as well go somewhere else. I might as well retire,” Bernie stated
