Dalton Smith vs Mathieu Germain headlined a Matchroom Boxing card on April 19 at the Cannon Medical Arena, Sheffield. The entire card was shown live on DAZN in over 200 countries. It was ultimately a dominating showing from “Thunder” as he won widely on the scorecards.
As Dalton Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) made his way to the ring, the Arctic Monkeys’ smash hit “When the Sun Goes Down” played, and the atmosphere reached a fever pitch. It was time for “Thunder” to take another step closer to a shot against unbeaten WBC super lightweight world champion Alberto Puello.
The opening round of Dalton Smith vs Mathieu Germain was cagey, with both starting patiently. Smith landed a smart right hand while his opponent landed a heavy jab near the end of the round. The second round saw “Thunder” dominate with his superior hand speed standing out. Towards the end of the round, he landed a beautiful left hook, knocking Germain (26-3-1, 11 KOs) down.
The third round saw the Canadian have his best moments, but a well-timed uppercut had Germain on the back foot. The speed, accuracy and power of Smith, helped him boss the early rounds.
After a couple of quiet rounds, Smith upped the tempo again, mixing his shots well and forcing Germain to retreat. At the halfway point, it was the body shots that were really hurting the Canadian.
As the fight reached the later rounds, Smith was in complete control, bossing the tempo of the fight – landing the more meaningful punches. Round 11 saw the Canadian lean back to avoid a Smith attack but was caught with a right hand from Smith, which saw the Brit score another knockdown. The rest of the round saw Germain in retreat mode.
The final round saw Smith increase the pressure. He lost a point for a low blow but scored another knockdown, reaffirming his dominance. It was an impressive performance from Smith, despite not getting the stoppage win. He controlled the fight from start to finish. The judge’s scorecards were read and confirmed the dominance of “Thunder:” 117-107 and 119-105 x2.
In the super featherweight division, Josh Warrington (32-4-1, 8 KOs) successfully returned to action, defeating Asad Asif Khan (19-7-1, 5 KOs) by unanimous decision. Warrington scored a knockdown in the sixth and dominated much of the fight. The judge’s scorecards read 99-89, 99-90 and 97-91 all in favour of the Leeds warrior.
Josh Padley (16-1, 5 KOs) enjoyed a memorable Matchroom debut, mixing his shots impressively, stopping Marko Cvetanovic (13-1, 6 KOs) in the fifth round to win the WBA international lightweight title.
Caoimhin Agyarko (17-0, 7 KOs) showed plenty of resilience and skill as he claimed a majority win over Ryan Kelly (19-6-1, 8 KOs) on short notice to become the new WBA continental super welterweight champion. The first scorecard read 95-95, while the remaining cards were 97-94 and 96-94 for the “The Black Thunder.”
Giorgio Visioli (7-0, 6 KOs) showcased his exceptional hand speed and spiteful combination punching as he dominated and stopped Kane Baker (19-12-2, 1 KO) in the fourth round of their super featherweight clash.
Leli Buttigieg (8-0, 2 KO) impressed in his middleweight contest, stopping the durable Grant Dennis (19-11, 3 KOs) in round five with a brutal left to the body.
In the opening fight of the night, Joe Howarth (12-1, 4 KOs) dominated his fight against Mario Portillo (8-7-2, 2 KOs) in the lightweight division, winning 60-54.
