Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. are confident of coming out with a win as they look ahead to their bout.
Davis is the favorite arriving into this fight, as he seeks to follow up on his Frank Martin win. He stopped the latter in his last fight to retain his WBA Lightweight Title. A win over Roach puts Tank in a position to face the biggest names, having been linked with fights against Shakur Stevenson, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. Roach aims to become a two-weight world champion, having secured the WBA title at 130. He defeated Hector Garcia to get the belt. Here is how the fight could play out.
Davis will want to walk his man down if Roach starts boxing. Tank proved this against Martin, who was having success at the start of the fight. Once Tank recognized that Martin could not hurt him with his power, Davis walked him down, landing an uppercut followed by a left hand to end the fight. Davis is willing to take shots to get his punches off. But that is a fine line, as one punch can change a game. Gervonta has a 93 percent knockout rate. He has only failed to stop two fighters, one of which was Isaac Cruz. But Tank suffered a hand injury in that fight, showing the tough task that Roach faces.
Roach will hope to use his jab and steal the early rounds to build up a lead. It will also help him keep Davis away, if he can catch him every time Gervonta tries to close the distance. It will require a lot of lateral movement, as he may need to fight on the back foot, landing his jab followed by combinations. A key part of this will be to avoid the ropes.
Martin suffered after getting cornered as Davis lined him up to end the fight. Roach also has to be wary of getting overconfident. The more he opens up, the easier Davis will find it to land a counter. Tank showed it in the Ryan Garcia fight when he dropped him in round two with a left hand counter. The stage is set for an intriguing fight.
“I think Lamont Roach is a terrific fighter, he might be a little over his head with Gervonta Davis. Gervonta Davis is, I mean, to say the least. He’s a beast. He really is. He’s [Gervonta Davis] a tremendous fighter. He’s a dedicated fighter when it comes to training and fighting and making sure that he’s in optimal conditions when he steps inside that squared circle. It’s gonna be a tough night for Roach, but you can never count him out,” Oscar De La Hoya said
“I mean, like, he’s [Tank is] a bad man. He can fight. He’s tough. I know we had our back and forth or whatever, but at the end of the day, if we talk about just boxing, hey, absolutely. So I don’t know why everybody’s kind of sleeping on Lamont, but he has a decorated amateur career too. He’s a very sturdy kid. He’s very skilled. Tank is Tank. And when I say Tank is Tank, I mean like he’s a bad man. He can fight. He’s tough,” Claressa Shields
