Errol Spence Jr. Future Is Uncertain
Image Press Agency

Errol Spence Jr. (28-1 22 KO’s) return to the ring has been delayed again. His expected bout with WBC and WBO Junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora has been called off. Fundora has moved on to fight Chorldale Booker and now Spence is looking for another opponent. It’s been 544 days since Spence last fought. Boxing fans remember Spence getting demolished by Terance Crawford via 9th round TKO.

The absolute worst thing for a fighter is to be hit with the inactive bug. Nothing hurts a fighter more than being away from the ring. Despite Spence being away from the ring he almost landed a title shot. Even though details weren’t released on why the fight fell through, it will be hard to imagine Spence getting a title fight in his comeback fight.

What’s next?

At this point, who exactly would he fight? I don’t want to start sparking up retirement rumors that Spence has already denied. But at this point what is left for an aging declining former champion with broken confidence? It’s essential that Spence gets back in the ring as soon as possible. He needs to have a serious plan to fight twice this year if he’s serious about making a run at another championship in his ideal weight class of 154.

The longer he’s away then maybe the retirement smoke should go in full swing. As much as boxing fans would love to see him return, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to see Spence walk away from boxing. He’s accomplished more than all of the fighters in his generation. He can walk away as a hall of famer and be proud of the great career that he’s had. But the longer he’s away it could indeed signal the end of days for the former champion.
