‘Finalizing the Paperwork’: Vergil Ortiz Jr. Close to Next Fight Announcement
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Vergil Ortiz Jr. was due to appear on the stacked August 3 card at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles against Tim Tszyu for the vacant WBA interim title. Tszyu had to withdraw due to his scalp laceration not healing following his bloody battle with Sebastian Fundora. The fight was ultimately removed from the card – but Dan Rafael has reported in his substack that Ortiz and a new opponent “are in the process of finalizing the paperwork” to appear on a Golden Boy August 10 card in Las Vegas.

How Fight Came About

Junior middleweight KO Specialist Vergil Ortiz Jr. (21-0, 21 KOs) looks set to take on WBC interim champion Serhii Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs), with Rafael revealing the intriguing fight will take place as the main event of a Golden Boy Promotions event on August 10. Sources involved revealed to Fight Freaks Unite, the fight will take place at a site to be determined in Las Vegas.

Due to Tszyu not being cleared to fight, Bohachuk was offered as a replacement for the August 3 card, but it was decided to pull the fight. Despite the refusal from Saudi to accept the fight, Golden Boy quickly adjusted and made the bout for one week later as a main event.

Ortiz has suffered over recent years with injury – which saw him unable to fight in 2023. His return to the ring has seen him fight twice in 2024, where he demolished Fredrick Lawson in January, and a brutal body shot saw another first-round stoppage win against Thomas Dulorme in April.

Bohachuk has only experienced one defeat back in 2021 against Brandon Adams and recently won the vacant WBC interim strap, winning a comfortable unanimous decision against Brian Mendoza on the Tszyu-Fundora undercard, with the scorecards reading 117-111×2 and 118-110.
