Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga Preview

This will be a better fight than most people realize. Here, we have a classic archetype of a young, hungry, solid fighter against a great old fighter. It’s also another chapter in the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry, and Alvarez has used that as a selling point for fans to purchase the pay-per-view. Perhaps Canelo has learned something from Floyd Mayweather Jr. over the years.

Berlanga started his career with a record 16 consecutive first-round knockouts, but things seemed to decline when he stepped up his level of opposition. Although he has exemplified improvement in recent fights, Berlanga likely needs more seasoning to beat a fighter like Canelo. But there’s no denying he is a talented kid with an experienced crew behind him, including top strength & conditioning coach Angel “Memo” Heredia and premier manager Keith Connolly. Berlanga scored his first knockout since 2020 in February when he destroyed Padraig McCrory in six rounds.

Father Time is undefeated, and it’s been the question for Alvarez for the last few years: Is he slowing down? He probably is. Let’s be honest about it. He’s a 34-year-old man with 65 professional fights under his belt. It’s not just the fights but the training camps, the sparring, the preparation, etc. At some point, every athlete, regardless of how storied their prime was, has to face the curtain. Alvarez is not quite there yet. His recent victories over Jermell Charlo and a one-sided win over Jaime Munguia prove his superior skills have yet to erode.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga Prediction

If Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is himself, he should win the fight, but if there’s any slippage, the 27-year-old Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), who has trained hard for this opportunity, could be in position to score a major upset. However, Canelo remains one of the sport’s elite counterpunchers, and Berlanga isn’t exactly known for his defense. Expect a very exciting fight with many tense moments, but Canelo will silence the haters again.

Final Prediction: Alvarez by unanimous decision (116-112)
