On Saturday, Mickaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan will face off against each other in the ring.
Mayer will be defending her WBO welterweight title, having beaten Ryan in the previous fight to claim the belt.
It was a close decision, Mayer did enough just to persuade the judges.
The build-up did produce lots of controversy after Ryan was hit with paint as she left her hotel room on her way to the fight venue. Ryan suggested that someone from Mayer’s camp may have been responsible.
Mayer refuted the claim, seeing as she’s aware that another win will set up an Undisputed Welterweight clash against Lauren Price.
Ryan is training with Mayer’s ex-coach Kay Koroma, adding another layer of tension to the fight atmosphere. She had beaten Terri Harper to claim the WBO belt, but unfortunately, she fell short in her first title defense.
Ryan has only lost twice in her career. She is facing off against someone that’s a surefire favorite in Mayer.
At weigh-in, the two fighters had a few choice words for each other.
Mayer said, “She thinks she’s so tricky. We know that’s how she is. We know she’s going to say that because she doesn’t like to engage anyway, and neither does her coach. Her coach wants to hide and stay in the shadows, and he’s probably telling her, ‘Don’t engage. I’m just doing what I have to do. I don’t do anything but speak the facts, and I’m doing my part to sell this fight. Everyone is coming together and working hard to give her the rematch that she wanted. The least she can do is show up and help the promotion of this fight,”
Ryan then shot back, saying, “You can see she loves the attention, the talk. When you don’t give her that, it triggers her. So, she’s saying, ‘Oh, she’s scared.’ I’m not scared. We just did a faceoff. This is for the media. This is what’s in the contract, and we’re here. She loves to talk and loves the media. When you don’t give her that, it makes her talk all kinds of nonsense,”
