What’s Next For George Kambosos ?
Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images

George Kambosos Jr. defeated Jake Wyllie, raising question marks over his next steps.

Kambosos arrived into the fight as the heavy favorite, as the pressure was on him to perform on his Matchroom Boxing debut. It was his first fight at 140 pounds after moving up from lightweight following his defeat to Vasiliy Lomachenko. Kambosos had a last-minute opponent after the initial match-up between Daud Yordan was called off as he withdrew due to illness. The win was the perfect response following Kambosos’ three defeats from his last four bouts before this. The win naturally sets him up for bigger fights.

Kambosos Vs. Hitchins

He could take on the IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Richardson Hitchins. The latter won his belt in his last fight by defeating Liam Paro to become the new champion. Hitchins is not seen as the most difficult champion at 140 pounds, meaning it is an opportunity for Kambosos to become a two-weight world champion. Eddie Hearn did say Hitchins was the next target.

“I thought he looked great for the first five or six rounds, but then he got the head clash and unraveled a little bit. Wyllie came on strong. For me, he can be competitive against Hitchins. But after a performance like that against Hitchins, he won’t beat him. Hitchins is an elite fighter. Jake Wyllie is a tremendous young prospect. It’s going to be interesting to see how he comes through but for me, Hitchins vs. Kambosos is a tremendous fight,” Hearn said

Other Options

There is also the opportunity to take on Paro in a domestic clash. Paro lost his title in his last fight to Hitchins. However, he has shown that he can pull off an upset when he defeated Subriel Matias in the fight before. The fight will sell out in Australia, giving Kambosos another massive payday, just as he had secured with the fights against Lopez and the two Devin Haney bouts.

There is also the opportunity to face off against Teofimo Lopez. Kambosos caused a massive upset when he defeated Lopez via a split decision to give The Takeover the first defeat of his career. Lopez made several remarks about the results, stating that he had done enough to win the fight. He also claimed that he had breathing problems coming into the bout, which impacted his performance.

The fight could now take place at 140 pounds since Teo is scheduled to fight Arnold Barboza Jr. in his WBO Junior Welterweight Title defense. That also gives Kambosos another opportunity to become a two-weight world champion, while Teo can avenge the wrongs from that fight. That has left Kambosos with plenty of things to consider moving forward.
