BYU loses multiple players to transfer portal

The transfer portal is open for business with players adding their names to find better situations. There are over 1,000 players hoping to land at a new destination in the coming weeks. When it comes to BYU, expect a few new additions in Provo out of the portal.

The Cougars made their 32nd appearance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, which ended in a Sweet 16 loss to Alabama. This will be a significant offseason for Kevin Young and his staff as they look to push deeper in 2025-26. BYU has some significant upside after landing the top overall recruit from Utah Prep, 6-foot-9 McDonald’s All-American AJ Dybantsa, who is listed as a small forward. The key will be building around the ‘generational talent’ knowing he’s going to be one-and-done before the NBA.

As it stands now, BYU basketball has the 11th-best recruiting class in 2025, according to 247Sports. The Cougars also landed Chamberlain Burgess and Xavion Staton. When teams have top recruiting classes, players will look to make the necessary moves to find somewhere else to play. It has become a part of the game.

BYU freshman Elijah Crawford and Kanon Catchings, along with senior Dallin Hall have entered the transfer portal this week. Hall was the Cougars starting point guard through 51 games, averaged 8.2 points per game and shot 42% from the floor and 36% behind the three-point line. Hall was a mainstay but will live out his final year outside of Provo.
